I finally made up my monotubs last night. I used one brick of coir, 2 quarts of verm, and 5 quarts of water using the bucket tek. I then mixed in 7 quarts of spawn (wbs). I'm so excited. I had a dream last night that I was picking mushrooms from them every time I checked, and I had many more than I knew what to do with.

~EDIT~ 9/8/2014 ----- 42 hours after preparation

~EDIT~ 9/11/2014 ----- 91 hours after prep

~EDIT~ 9/16/2014 ----- PUT INTO FRUITING -----
this is what it looked like at about 10 hours of fruiting
and this is what it looks like right now, at about 100 hours of fruiting

~EDIT~ 9/17/2014 ---- MY FIRST MUSHROOM
this was probably there yesterday, but I only noticed it today. behold, my biggest mushroom to date lol
 zoomed in

~EDIT~ 9/18/2014 ---- fuck it my sub's infected
welp, I found out my substrate's infected. I 95% positive that the bucket tek failed me. Or at least my execution of it. here's a picture anyways lol

~EDIT~ 9/19/2014 ---- Everything's fine folks.
Take a look for yourself. I don't know why my fungus produced metabolites, but everything's back to normal now. If it was indeed bacteria, as many have suggested in this thread, I suppose the fungus defeated it. It sounds pretty cocky to say it like that, so naturally I'm a bit skeptical of my hypothesis. Am I really in the clear?

QUESTION
Yesterday when I mixed my coir/verm substrate, I saved a few handfuls for a casing layer. It's just sitting in the bottom of my 5 gallon bucket, covered of course. Could this be a vector for contamination? Should I throw that mix in a couple of jars and run it through my PC?

From my understanding when using coir you don't need a casing

Yeah most people here don't recommend a casing unless its PE. All it will do is invite contams.

Thanks PussyFart
Still debating a casing layer... can someone answer my previous question, in the case that I do decide to case?

you sure can, my last sets i let the tray/tub colonize and blasted it with light for a day or so then added my leftover coir

Wouldn't you want to make an actual casing layer instead of leftover substrate?

Case or fruit. You may even want to wait a couple more days.

You said you saved some bulk substrate for a casing, BUT, i would do this instead. Use CVG for a bulk substrate, i would do 70% coir and 30% verm, more or less... (high in coir)
Then for a casing just invert the amounts. 70% verm, 30% coir. (low in coir)

Yeah, you want low nutes in your casing if you end up applying one, otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose. The Alien is right.

Take a close up that isn't blurry. It looks like it may be something other than just metabolites.
As an example of what I'm talking about, have a look at this fungus.

Yes.
It means something else is likely trying to consume your substrate.

I have some clear liquid on the sides of a couple of my jars right now. It looks like the mycellium is sweating or something.
Is this bad?

Here's some more pics. I find it hard to believe it's an infection. These things JUST started to appear in my second tub, which I put into fruiting only 4 hours ago. It's weird to me that they would appear only when put into fruiting. I've read that these metabolites can sometimes appear when temperatures are too high. My temps are approaching 80F in the closet, and they're probably a few degrees high inside the tub. I'm hoping high temps are the culprit.

Well I'm really glad I didn't case now. Still strange that these would pop up only after being put into fruiting. My second tub sat nearly 10 days before I put into fruiting, with no signs of metabolites. I put into fruiting 4 hours ago and they're starting to appear. I mean I guess bacteria like FAE too.

Updated op. I'm kinda in fuck-it-mode right now because I'm really bummed my sub is infected. Nonetheless I predict a couple of dry ounces. It actually looks like the mycelium is recovering. Or maybe not. Whatever has happened, it's not producing any new metabolites, and the existing metabolites are shrinking. Can mycelium "get better" after it's been infected?
