The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worth of being saved.
In a sense the Beatles are emblematic of the status of rock criticism as a whole: too much attention to commercial phenomena (be it grunge or U2) and too little attention to the merits of real musicians. If somebody composes the most divine music but no major label picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of rock critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a musician who is as stereotyped as one can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of rock criticism: rock critics are basically publicists working for free for major labels, distributors and record stores. They simply publicize what the music business wants to make money with.
Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great musician like Tim Buckley, who never sold much, and commercial products like the Beatles. And rock critics will study more of rock history and realize who invented what and who simply exploited it commercially.
Beatles' "aryan" music removed any trace of black music from rock and roll: it replaced syncopated african rhythm with linear western melody, and lusty negro attitudes with cute white-kid smiles.
Contemporary musicians never spoke highly of the Beatles, and for a good reason. They could not figure out why the Beatles' songs should be regarded more highly than their own. They knew that the Beatles were simply lucky to become a folk phenomenon (thanks to "Beatlemania", which had nothing to do with their musical merits). THat phenomenon kept alive interest in their (mediocre) musical endeavours to this day. Nothing else grants the Beatles more attention than, say, the Kinks or the Rolling Stones. There was nothing intrinsically better in the Beatles' music. Ray Davies of the Kinks was certainly a far better songwriter than Lennon & McCartney. The Stones were certainly much more skilled musicians than the 'Fab Fours'. And Pete Townshend was a far more accomplished composer, capable of "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia". Not to mention later and far greater British musicians. Not to mention the American musicians who created what the Beatles later sold to the masses.
The Beatles sold a lot of records not because they were the greatest musicians but simply because their music was easy to sell to the masses: it had no difficult content, it had no technical innovations, it had no creative depth. They wrote a bunch of catchy 3-minute ditties and they were photogenic. If somebody had not invented "beatlemania" in 1963, you would not have wasted five minutes of your time to read a page about such a trivial band.

They're not my favorite, not by far, but I'll call them the best and most important band any day of the year.

Have you ever even listened to a Beatles song? Or followed them?

I agree to an extent. They are quite overrated. I think they were very talented and wrote great music. Lennon wrote great songs and lyrics. Harrison was an amazing guitarist. I agree in the sense that they got world famous for being easy to sell. I would never put them above csny, Floyd, zep, rush
Members of the Beatles didn't even think ringo was that good, they never used any of his songs

Music isn't about technical musicianship.
First off, they wrote great songs, so there is your foundation.
Second, they had George Martin. It's hard for someone who wasn't around in 1966 to fathom how amazing Revolver sounded.
The production of those albums was unbelievable, nobody and I mean NOBODY at that time was doing what they did in the studio.
Listen to Magical Mystery Tour, 1967, the PRODUCTION end, fucking flawless, unbelievable.
Maybe it's because as a musician I go in the studio, my friend does production and I've experienced a lot of the "inside the album" stuff, the Beatles were WAYYYYYYYYYYY ahead of their time.
Second, it isn't how complicated what they play is, it's what they CHOSE to play. Nobody would realize without really listening how much of a drumming genius Ringo was. He knew EXACTLY what to play to drive the song, it's subtleties you wouldn't notice straight away, but they dramatically change your opinion and feel for the song.
Paul was a good musician by the way. Once again, simple bass lines, but they were INCREDIBLY melodic, and fit the songs PERFECTLY. Listen to bass lines like Benefit of Mr. Kite. Simple bass lines, but my God are they genius, the fact he CHOSE to play those things is what's amazing.
I can go on and on about this, I've made plenty of Beatles threads, but I can't go over every reason why they were as great as people claim, but God they really were.

In terms of influence and impact, there's no doubt about who the bigger band is. However, musically, I like The Who much, much more.

I don't appreciate the Who as far as musicianship goes, John Entwistle was super overrated.
I LOVE The Who though, the early Who.
My favorite albums in order
1. The Who Sell Out - BEST WHO ALBUM EVER
2. Tommy
3. Quadrophenia
Those 3 mainly are all I care for. And of course the REALLY early Who is good too.

I've only ever been lukewarm on The Beatles. My girl loves them so I've listened to them plenty, and they're good, but not my thing really.
The above statement is largely how I feel about all rock music, though.

In American culture it's almost like it's become unspoken word that the Beatles are the all supreme music gods. I think it's mainly a product of beatlemania. Even kids who don't listen to the Beatles just "know"
It's become engraved into our culture. Unspoken word. When the Beatles popped they were singing about faithful courtship and puppy love and all the normal kids could listen to it as they take they're date to get milk shakes at the diner. That type of demographic could be compared to the people today who watch American idol and all that stupid bs. The Beatles early music was composed for the average listener. Thus the term 'pop' music. The stigma of the Beatles is what mainly keeps them popular. Most people who claim they love the Beatles are probably just fans of the greatest hits.
I still like some of their trippy stuff. I like a few songs from sgt pepper, the white album, and others. I think they were a good band but I think they're popularity was produced by a culturally impotent farce.

Yep, only ever heard MPP. I used to dig them. Then I dunno, I started not enjoying them so much and I caught a live show and holy fuck that turned me off completely. Animal Collective fans are so easy to rile up though it's pretty fun.

Oh man I remember being 20 and trying mushrooms for the first few times and being blown away by Animal Collective. Peacebone and Grass blew me away. Then I developed a wider taste and perspective and suddenly AC felt like so much anxious post-pubertal art-school trip-noise. I wouldn't call them bad, but yeah, don't compare AC to the Beatles.
I saw Panda Bear at a festival a few years back though, enjoyed it, but most of the audience didn't. They left after the first couple of songs. Beach House was way more popular, even though they're doing pretty much the same thing bud wadded up in a lavender pillow.

This is all you need to know about what I think of the Beatles. I have hundreds of pieces of vinyl collected over 4 decades. I have hundreds of CDs collected over more than 20 years. I have a few remnant cassette tapes. Not one of them is by the Beatles. They bore the shit out of me
