Cased three jars, but...
    #2052336 - 10/29/03 01:22 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Buddy may have killed 'em. Casing was quite likely too hot when put on. Used: 1.5 cups Sphagnum Peat Moss; 1.5 cups Vermiculite; 4 tablespoons crushed oyster shell; 1 teaspoon gypsum; 350 ml water. Baked in pre-heated oven at 250 for one hour, used folded foil as container. So, turned off oven and let it sit for one hour fifteen minutes. Then let it sit for another fifteen minutes outside the oven. Gloves on when opened and dumped it on, a sanitized fork was used to spread- seemed too thin. He ended up spreading a bit with his gloved hand and it felt quite warm! He hopes he's overreacting but doubts he is. He knows his luck...Anyway there was no steam or anything like that at all and it was spred thinly, maybe it cooled quick enough not to kill? LOL...Anyway, he wrapped it in plastic wrap and sat in makeshift incubator.

Interesting things he learned: There is a very pleasant earthy mushroom smell emitted from the cakes. The cakes felt a lot like a kinda dry sponge and were much tougher than he imagined. he got to see a pin, albeit in the wrong place...It was inside his jar.

Yeah, guess so...Really not that impatient though, just had no idea that it was still "hot"- who knows, maybe it wasn't TOO hot...Actually my friend was taking his time, he could have easily put the foil casing in a cool spot and obviously should have or waited longer , error in judgement BUT those little cakes may yet bear fruit, by the by, we shall see. If not then, right on, a lesson learned.

Gonna try casing some others tonight, is it acceptable just to pop that foil pouch of baked casing in the fridge to cool? I mean opening it seems insane after it was just baked to sterilize.

Damn, I was also hoping someone would give me a bit of hope (false or otherwise) that the first tray may be just fine, LOL!

Regards to all

wow i cant imagine that it would still be too hot after an hour and a half of cooling. I dont use peat, i use coir and vermiculite, and it usually cool withing a half hour of turning the oven off. I wait at least two hours before casing tho and i always case with clean bare hands to feel for heat.

I think the best thing to do before casing is to always test it with your finger to see if its warm to the touch.
