Tyvek lid moisture question
    #20520401 - 09/04/14 05:42 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I PC'd 12 rye quart jars last night and when I removed the foil from the top of the jars there was some condensation droplets on the tyvek.

I brushed it of with a paper towel but should I be worried about contams wicking in?

I have a 3/8 hole drilled thru the lids and the tyvek over the lid and then the ring sealing it. Just one layer of Dupont tyvek I cut from a suit.

I also noticed a little extra moisture in my jars, not much but a little. and a few grains looked like they came in contact with some extra moisture.

Should I not use these jars, or am I good to go?

I've had some moisture on my tyvek.  Never a problem.

As I look at these jars that were at the bottom of the PC, it seems like some moisture did get into the jars. not very much, but its obvious.

I'm not a fan of tyvek as people know. A better pic of the jars would be helpful in determining if they were good to use. Try getting a close up.

Ok, so the couple little beads of moisture shouldn't be a problem then, im assuming.

And if im correct, DuPont tyvek painters suits are suitable as a filter?

These are 5 dif jars. you see how theres a grain or two stuck to the side in pic #1? They were all kinda like that, but I shook them up. I figured it was condensation that rolled down the inside and got them more moist.

I dried these gains on a towel on my kitchen table for an hour and a half under a ceiling fan before I PC'd

A bit of moisture on your filter is no big deal as long as it doesn't stay wet for to long. If you must use tyvek make sure you use more than one layer. I don't trust that shit

Yeah those jars look okay but like muda said tyvek is sketchy. It has been shown that the pore size increases during the PC cycle.

SFDs, EZ felt and poly fill are all better options.

I have SFD's but when I put them on, i put on the lid > Disk > Ring and it doesn't want to fit correctly. I have to force it on and it bends my rings.

What ill do, is put a second layer of tyvek on top of each jar.

What do yall think?

Do you guys have a solution for that SFD problem? I want to use them, i have a bunch but its such a tight fit. Maybe just use the SFD AS the lid?

Using an SFD as a lid will likely give you to much GE bordering on FAE and will dry out your jars I think. I have been using EZ felt a lot lately and really like it.

I tried this once and it dried the grains out at an astounding rate :frown:

Yea. Is there any way to maybe cut a little bit off the rim of the SFD to make it fit better?

Honestly, ill probably never use Tyvek again. Too much of a pain in the ass to cut and fuck with.

I just wanted to experiment with it this time.

I just wrapped all the jar lids with a 2nd layer of tyvek....So, them being only one layered for the last 2 hours while I prepped and nocced em up in my SAB with agar wedges, do I risk contam?

I cut up my SFD's into small circles and silicone them to plastic lids so I can't really suggest what you should do if you plan to keep them whole. Maybe just really try to press them down into place  I don't think making the SFD thinner at any point is a good idea tho.

I've read that some SFDs like the ones at aloha require their own special lids.

I got my SFD's from Out-Grow.com

I also read that doing it with the little circles siliconed on top of the hole in the lid doesn't give it the proper GE it needs or whatever. But then again, people write all kinds of contradicting things.

How long have u been using that method? Good results?

Also, what do you use to trace your circles on the SFD? A water bottle lid or something?

Nah that should work fine, I think some people recommend bigger holes anyway. The tek I followed just said 1/4"
