Having some probs with slow development
    #2050796 - 10/28/03 02:15 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

both of my boxes have an enormous amount of pins but they came up 4 days ago and are still pins. There are a few that went on t mature but the vast majority haven't grown at all. They aren't aborted (yet) and I dont know whats happening. Temp is 75 and they're bulk neglect so I dont know what the humidity is. Anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get them growing again? Should I try taking off the plastic covering the boxes?

Yes, definatly take the plastic off. Are you fanning, or do you have any circulation going around?

I've been fanning on average 5 times a day. Any idea why only a few of the pins matured?

I just read the FAQ on mycofile neglect report again.

the casing layer in my boxes is about 4-5" down from the top of the box. And then I read this...

Question: Something that I think was a bit underemphasized [maybe?] in the responses to this success is the level of the casing relative to its container. Many large rubbermaid casings will fail primarily because the casing is sitting deep within a chamber [often airtight]. This favors CO2 stratification, usually requires some kind of manual work. The tray above, even when 'bagged', is not within a well of plastic like in a typical rubbermaid system. Mycofile mentioned this, but it seems like a major physical difference from other systems and worth mentioning again

Answer: I think you are right. The sides of the trays should not be much higher than the casing level, allowing CO2 to drain off. I believe that was underemphasized as well.

That's my fuckin problem isn't it? Shit! Any ideas of what I can do? I'll take off the plastic for sure and try to fan as much as possible. Any other suggestions?

Do you mist the sides of your box, for humiditys sake?
Is the substrate dry? I really dont know much about bulk neglect.
Its possible theyre aborts, but havnt turned black on the outside yet. Try taking one and seeing what its like on the inside

Yah, I've been misting when needed. I'll check the inside of a few aswell.

Build A Poor Mans Pod.
It involves putting air stones (connected to an air pump) on the bottom, under the perlite, to circulate the air. This eliminates CO2 build up and the need for fanning.

you have to remember that these thing aren't in a terrarium. They sit on the floor in the closet with no climatic control other than temp.

Anyways, I just split a few of the pins and and some are definately aborted but alot are still fine.

Here's what I think I'll do:
I'm gonna wait a couple more days and see what happens with all the fanning I'll be doing. Hopefuly I'll get a few more mature fruits. If nothin improves, I'm just gonna scrape off the casing layer (pins and all) and then top the boxes up with more straw and dung being extra cautious not to contaminate. Then back in spawn run and then case again. What do you guys think of that... will it work?

I think the addition of fresh straw and dung would be more of a contam risk than simply reapplying a fresh casing.

What do you guys think?

Funny you should mention that. I just finished tearing off the old casing layers and was about to tell you about it.

I decided that a 12" deep substrate was a little overkill so I decided to disect. It was a pain in the ass but all the casing came off and I just hope that i got all the pins too. I cut the boxes down aswell so that the casing layer will be less than an inch from the top of the boxes. I'll let you know if I get contamed. *fingers crossed*
