I get a better top pinset with a liner, but more pins in general without.

Your issue lies in how your using the liner not the liner itself.
I used to have issues with liners myself and now when one fails I can usually tell why.

My biggest qualm with liners so far is having a hard time finding a large, durable, non-opaque liner ... thinking I wanna grab some retro furniture laminate and make some transparent, sized-up ones out of it.

Fungus defies logic... What functional difference do liners make? I wouldn't think it's an issue of light, seeing as the center pins just fine (unless everyone is photoshopping their images and the cosmos has been having a Fuck With Mat field day off and on for the last year and a half-- which I wouldn't rule out)

Liners are there to prevent pins from coming up in places where you can't easily reach them, and they also help retain moisture and make good handles to pick up the whole substrate with.

Folks say like like em to reduce side pinning and it makes it easier to pull out to harvest and dunk. I get few side pins that don't bother me and i don't dunk. And i am not wasteful

Oh! Painter's plastic sounds wonderful. Furniture laminate would be a bit thick anyway, but I like this. I'll give that a shot.
Edit: Lovely ninja subject edit, that.

Best way to use a liner is to not open the trash bag up, just unfold it. Then tape the sides in the centre low enough to keep it from suspending the sub too much. Do not tape the corners.
After spawning trim at least an inch up from sub level and when it folds over the water will run down behind it. Then the bags will seperate as the sub shrinks preventing the bag being stuck to the wall from pulling it off of the sub in places allowing the pins to get started.

See the gap where the two layers of liner seperate? That lets you know its doing its job

liners reduce side pins by clinging to the substrate as it shrinks. Which prevents air from getting to the sides and bottom of the sub. I generally try to use them but some times I forget or get lazy. I do get more side pins without a liner but when this happens I just take the sub out of its tray or tub and fruit it in my GH so all sides can fruit. All the fruits in the third pic in my sig started out as side and bottom pins.

Whoops My phone has crazy auto correct I meant Clear liner not clean haha.
I buy that thick ass plastic drop cloth at the hardware store to use for my liners now. 5 bux buys liners enough for 20 tubs Ive seen a 75% reduction in side pins since using a thick liner over the thin trashbags I was cutting up before

So I looked in on the tub this morning and this little guy had popped up from a gap that has formed between the liner and substrate.
My first fruit ever-- I've named him King Baby Dick you can even see it peaking out in one of the pictures I posted yesterday, which is kinda funny (to the right of the top-left pollyfill'd hole)
There are 2 others whose shadow I can see pressed up against the side in tight formation around him, forming in the new gap between the colonized sub and liner. I'm thrilled about this, candidly, but it also makes me wonder about the rest of the substrate... this pocket was by far the most moist in the entire tub (on the side with the least airflow, in a crack that would collect and retain high moisture levels.

Also, on closer inspection of the sides I can see that standing water has collected at the bottom of the tub outside the liner; does anything need to be done about that?
