Why does Weilii have such a broad range of characteristics?

I've been looking at photos of Psilocybe weilii, and truth be told, even after looking up the identifying characteristics, I don't see how they can possibly be identified as being the same mushroom. They just look so different.
Here's an example, two different photos from the Wiki page:
This one is blue.
This one is brown.
Another example:
This is also claimed to be weilii, but it's white!
My major concern is that while I'm out looking for them, how can I even know what to pick up? Are there definitive characteristics besides color to look for?
Obviously I would make spore prints and post here before eating anything that I found, but I'd like to know where to start. I don't think that picking everything I see is a good method of searching... so what should I look for?
Thanks!

This thread was moved from Shroomery University.
Reason: It fits better here.
When looking at the characteristics, its hard to see that they are all the same species, yet when you think about it, it has a simple explanation. The first are partially dry. The dark blue green caps are from environmental conditions which are dry/cold and hot/dry. Really just from Psilocin oxidizing, so we see the blue green turning pale brown caps very green.
The second pic is nice and carmel cap brown, yet wet, notice where its started to dry out, its called a hygrophanous cap - turns pale when dry. So this habitat allowed for mushrooms which were not bruised and conditions which were favorable, which is what kept them brown and not green.
The third is a really dry cap, but if you look at the shape and in person you would see similarities between all these species.
From a taxonomy standpoint, its easy to awnser your question.
A article which documents a species concept as having something with three differences (vrs just mating compatabilities). When you put these mushrooms under a microscope, they are all the same, and even if they look a little different from place to place, they are genetically very very similar.

haha the microscopy subforum got promoted to an official subforum of mh&I so they threw me in there
watch out.
it does put some extra kick in my pants to work on the guide here and work on my ID skills more, been lacking the kick lately!
