Damn the flies (Pics)
    #2032896 - 10/22/03 05:19 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ahhhh! It's infested with flies... fungus flies i think.
I searched the boards and someone had suggested to leave a small cup of vinegar with holey plastic over it in your terrarium. I left it over night and this afternoon i checked it and no flies were dead :frown:. Now i don't know what to do, does anyone have an idea?

A cup of vinegar will only attract more flies.

How to get rid of them? Dump all infested casings before starting new ones, install a ultraviolet fly trap, place yellow stickers into the terrarium, and as long there are no mushrooms on the casing, you could spray the terrarium with a pyrethrum based insecticide.

But in a long term, definitely get rid of all infested casings.

Very good advice. I have fought this battle myself, and that is the only winning move I have found.

In my case, the damn things kept coming back and back and back. I finally found an old pillowcase partly full of dung that I had forgotten about in the back of a closet. They had infested that and were spreading from it.

Filling any vent holes in your terrarium with polyfill, or taping a small screen over them, will help keep the flys out as well.

Hardware stores, or larger electric stores stock them.

Fungal gnats can be controlled biologically by using their natural enemy, the predatory mite Hypoaspis miles.

You can purchase the mites at either of these sites

well thats the way to do it, bugs are easy to control if you dont turn to some sort of man made product, just buy a load of it natural predator. As soon as the food source has gone they die out or they stick around and keep the problem under control
