it is not necessary, but it helps. if you do it it will take longer for fruits to come, but your casings will be able to absorb moisture better, also a casing layer is less prone to contams.

personally, i think that uncased bulk is nowhere near as good as cased. that casing layer provides a microclimate, water, protection from drying, allows you to control an even pinset, makes your penis grow bigger, etc etc etc.

i have no where near the experience of shirley up there. but what about rogers straw logs. they seem to fruit great when you keep the plastic on until u see pins all over it. casing is optional with mr. cubenesis. I think if you don't have a way to test ur ph in the casing ur asking for a contaminate.

The plastic sheet on the straw logs is to keep the moisture, just like a casing layer does on spawned substrate. Ive found that if i dont case bulk for the first flush, i end up with VERY clean shrooms that grow directly from the mycelia, i dont even have to clean coir/dung off them. just pick them beauties. But i never go to a 2nd flush without a casing layer. NEVER.
