R2D2's Second Grow (Outside Fruits!)
    #20487282 - 08/28/14 02:26 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all, this is my second grow.

My question on monotubs is dose anyone drain the water out of the bottom of their tubs? It looks like there is some standing water in there but I don't see anyone in their  teks draining the water out. I checked the search engine and found a couple of posts from a few years ago and they were inconclusive. I apologize if my question is redundant but I live in a hot and humid area and molds grow like crazy here. Thanks for the help!

Here are the stats

1) 4 one pint rye berry jars spawned(B+)

Put into tub on 24Aug

26Aug

28Aug

2) 2 one pound WBS spawn bags. (Burma)

Sorry, forgot to take a pic of these bags. They were fully colonized and smelled fine.

Put into tub on 26Aug

Here are both tubs side by side. I apologize for the crappy pic, it's dark and the flash makes the tubs look messed up. I can't sleep so I thought I would post my grow.

So far I think they both look great. I used a trusted vendors substraite and I cannot be happier. I had a 10 pound bag of compost sitting in my fridge for a week (lady of the house was treated to several dinners in a nice restaurant) and when I opened up the bag it was moist and at field capacity. Now I finally understand exactly what it's supposed to look like and feel like.

Anyways, any suggestions and or comments are welcome! This site and the people on it rock

The water is fine to build up under your liner, just dump it when you harvest

Hello all, I was wondering if in seeing Hyphal Knots in this substraite? I introduced fruiting conditions last night. There are a lot of water droplets on the sub but some of the white dots in the picture look like knots. I compared them to the "How it should/should not look" pictures but I'm not sure.

Can anyone tell?

Substraite before fruiting.

Substraite after fruiting. Knots?

Thanks for the help!

Are these monotubs starting to show hyphal knots or are they infected?

I noticed the small white dots in the mycelium a couple of days ago in this tub (B+) but some of the mycelium looks grey. Is this ok?

This tub (Burma) is progressing slowly and some of the mycelium has a grey color. Am I just worried for no reason and being impatient?

I appreciate any help from the community, thanks!

They both look a little off to me but the don't look bad. I would just watch them close. I see some knotting on the bottom of the B+ pic. The burma looks weird cause of the huge chunks of uncolonized substrate on top of the surface.

Cool, thanks Fivel.

The Burma was spawned to bulk a few days after the B+. I forgot to even out the substraite when I mixed in the spawn so I'm hoping that's why it's got that uneven

That's good news that there are some knots in the B+ though....  :dancer:

I dont see any knots in the B+
it seems to have a bit of bacteria though, the long stretchy fingers going on in there.
how's the fae in that tub? dry rings and such?
You should give it 5-15 mins of direct sunlight from your window every day
in addition to loads of fae.

I hope the burma isn't in fruiting? what's your substrate ingredients?

Thanks Spacechildo, I was worried it may have bacteria........

Here are a couple of pictures oft he B+ tub. I tried to dial it in and make sure it's getting FAE. The top polyfill is in there real loose and the bottom is a little tighter.

I will get the B+ some more sunlight. I have a fan running on low in the room and I could turn it up higher. Do you think I should fan?

Thanks for the help!

The Burma is not in fruiting yet. I thought I should wait till the substrate is completely colonized.

Oh, the substrate was purchased from a trusted vendor. It's a horse manure based substrate.

Here are a few close ups of the B+ in some areas I thought could be knots.

Thanks!

Nope those aren't knots. Have you seen RR's picture of the mushrooms growing on dollar bills? That's a great knotting pic.

IDK man, I saw the few fivel was talking about, maybe 5 in bottom left corner and 10 more spread out.

you should try coir+verm as its more newb friendly and contam resistant than manure.

pre-pasteurized sounds like the clock started ticking way before you got your hands on it..
And I have no idea what they did to it.. did you re-pasteurize?

dont fruit the burma until its completely white!

maybe even give the b+ even more fae, and some sunlight everyday.
contambacteria can be dried up and set back, but it will always be a bitch in your tub.

just keep at it and I'm sure you'll see fruits, dont go dry it out completely
just make minor adjustments and wait 2-3-4 days to see the change.
keeping cool and patience is what its all about

Thanks dude, I will go the choir/verm rout the next time.......it was a little crazy to try horse manure but i will learn from my mistakes. I did not re-pasteurize and probably had the substrate sitting in my fridge to long as I was waiting for my spawn jars to colonize.

I will try to give it more FAE and sunlight without drying it out. If all else fails I can set up a patch in my back yard in the shade and see if I can get a flush or two as an outside grow.

Thanks for the help!

From what I can tell you are lucky it's not green yet lol. So that's win number 1. I found a thread about bacteria once that said it can't be present where there is no water. So the less water the better when it comes to bacteria, but you have mushrooms to think about so you can't dry it out completely. Check out this thread, it looks a lot like your substrate and he did the same thing (sun and fresh air, slow controlled drying of the substrate) It worked like a charm for his sub.

Re: R2D2's Second Grow (Outside Fruits!) [Re: R2D2]
    #20597455 - 09/21/14 02:53 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So after a few days following my last post both of my tubs started to smell like a dirty sock. I took both tubs outside and did the following:

1) I mixed both tubs together

2)I added 2 pints of worm castings and 2 pints of gypsum and mixed it all up.

3) I took a cardboard box and cut out a "tray" out of the bottom of the box. Basically a tray with 4" high sides. The tray measured 2'X2'.

4) I dumped everything into my cardboard tray and buried it so the sides were even with the ground.

5) I covered the whole thing with vermiculite about 4" deep and covered that with a layer of dead leaves, wood chips, and dirt.

6) I took a garbage bag and cut some small slits in it and coverd my patch and used some rocks around the edges to hold it down.

7)I watered twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. It started raining like crazy a few days ago so I took off the garbage bag and let it get good and soaked.

I went out and looked yesterday and there were shrooms! I am so stoked!!! :dancer:

Here are a couple of pics

The only thing I am worried about is it looks like something is digging into the mycelium. I don't know if raccoons, possums, or fruit rats would eat the mushrooms???
