cuttings hard to root
    #2044923 - 10/26/03 02:15 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

high community!
months ago i've been gifted by a local friend with a nice cutting of a very nice columnar cactus (no ID so far). it looks like one of those round body trichs, very glaucous, with almost no radial spines and sometimes a central one (very similar to t. colossus). well, it doesn't matter.
what matter is that i left it callous for a GOOD while, put to root and lost a cutting to the evil blackness (after a month or more, bottom watering). there are eruption signs under the two remaining cuts but they've been there for months. sometimes i see tiny bugs and centipodes around, are they good bad or just ugly?
or would it just be that my cuttings are still under dormancy from winter?
thanks for stopping by!

If they are dormant for winter you wont need to hardly water them at all......

They may not actually start to have any major looking rooting until spring time.....but they may slowly start throughout the winter.....

If any nasty blackness springs up again cut it off and callus again....after callus is there use a touch of rooting hormone and some type of sulphur based fugicide

cuttings will usually produce roots without watering, its not as fast but it still works. Just put it in your soil mix and let it sit, a little bottom watering doesnt hurt, but never enough to where the soil by the cactus actually gets damp. Just some water in the soil below it is more than enough and they will start shooting out roots to go get it. Patience is the key.

i attribute the rotting to anything (bugs) but watering.

Keep it warm,(25 - 30 Celsius) and give it bright light. Soil may contain some moist but should be apparently dry.

I thought cuttings should be put in the dark for roots to for?  I tried rooting an offshoot from a san pedro last year and kept it under bright lights, but it never rooted, even after a month   I kept the soil dry for the most part, but I never saw any signs of rooting? I'm confused...
