I'm in the .5 percentile. Meaning I'm supposed to be smarter than 99.5%. Sometimes when no one is looking, I give myself a hug just for being me.

IQ doesn't mean shit. There are plenty of homeless geniuses out there and many complete retards in positions of power.

IQ tests are bunk.

I've taken several different kinds and scored everything in the range between 140-180.

If the test is heavily based in reading comprehension, conceptual, and aesthetic/spacial type stuff, I score on the higher end of the spectrum.  If the test is more about math and numbers and pattern recognition, then I score on the lower end.  (I think the math area in my brain was damaged by the doctor's forceps when I was born  )

The only halfway accurate test would be one based in Gardener's theory of multiple intelligences, in which the tester would be given several different scores for tests focused in several different areas of aptitudes.  I have yet to see a test like that.

But biases for/against different kinds of aptitudes arent IQ tests only problem.  Some people dont test well, period.  Some people have high intelligence, but low motivation, or emotional problems that interfere with their intelligence.  And then there are all the situational factors surrounding the administration of the test.  Is the test taker confortable?  Has he had enough sleep?  Is he in a good mood or a bad one?  What drugs has he done recently?  What distracting things are going on in his life?  IQ tests dont even try to factor in all that shit.

I think online IQ tests are not accurate at all.. I've also gotten scores from 130-180 on them.

Real IQ tests in general don't judge a person's total intelligence. There are a lot of factors invovled, as Suess pointed out. There's also a lot of things they DONT test for.. that do have to do with intelligence. What about street smarts..or creativity.. but generally they test your ability to reason and use logic. They do take about three hours to complete.. there's a lot they can test for..but a lot they don't.

For those reasons and all you mentioned, they are not all that accurate..but they can give you a general idea of where you stand..rationally speaking.

But that number doesn't really mean anything at all.. because there are so many more things that make up your mind. You can't just put a number and say: "You are this intelligent"... Intelligence is simply the ability to learn. What works for some people doesn't work for others.. we are all different.

Then there is the emotional quotient (sp?) test.. which is similar to IQ test but tests your emotional 'intelligence'. I took one of those and scored pretty low, but I think I've come a long way in three years with my emotions.

There are many different types of intelligences. Someone did many case studies on these multifaceted intelligences (ranging from intrapersonal to athletic intelligence) whose name eludes me right now.

Online IQ tests are unreliable.

It was a man named Gardener that came up with the theory of multiple intelligences. There were 8 categories of aptitude, ranging from math to reading comp to music, to street smarts.

I think the theory has some validity, but I think that there are a lot more aptitude categories than just 8... and there are new ones being created all the time... evolution=new challenges= new skills= new aptitudes

When I was in school I was selected to be in some kinda gifted program where they would let me leave certain classes now and then to work on my own thing. All the kids selected for this spent a day writing a really long drawn out IQ test type thing. It started easy and then got harder and harder and harder. The results weren't for us. I don't know what I scored but someone does. I wonder where those results go.. and what for? I guess they were looking for super geniuses to sell to the USA or something.. pay off the debt.

There have been a number of discussions like these. One person, who had trouble spelling, defended tooth-and-nail years ago that his IQ was 196.

When I was involved with psychiatry, I had to take IQ and other tests four times year. I had always danced around the 130 mark, my last result being 131. My highest had been 137, lowest 122. These are some pretty wide fluctuations. All of this was two years ago.

I think it is funny that those with higher IQ's are often pretty quiet about it, while those who score lower vehemently vocalize that an IQ test cannot depict a person's intelligence accurately. I do not necessarily disagree with that point, but it is notable how easily it is ignored.

I have trouble spelling, but have a pretty decent mind. I also know people that are very good at spelling, but cannot figure out simple math problems.

Why is it that every post down this page lists a higher IQ?

And I'm not saying there aren't different kinds of intelligence, but the kids who claimed some distinction between "book-smart" and "street-smart" were usually fucking retarded. How can you be "street-smart" in the fifth grade? What exactly does that MEAN? Application to real world situations?

I'm a chemist. Does that mean I don't know how to talk to people? Get where I'm going?

I cannot speak for "street-smart", but in my field (computer science) there are people that were very "book-smart", but that could not code their way out of a paper bag. You being a Chemist, it would surprise me if you didn't see the same thing in school... they could ace the tests, but get these same people into a lab and they don't know the open end of a test tube from the closed end.

i am in mensa. most of the people i met at meetings arent doctors, physicists, or c.e.o.'s. they are carpenters, secretaries, and janitors. i think that most intelligent people understand that money isnt the focus of like. to me, no work is as rewarding as getting out in the world and working with your hands. some of the most intelligent conversations i've had about time and the universe have not been with college students, but with brick layers. i dont put much stock in iq tests. i couldnt even talk until i was almost 3 years old.
