I approve of this tek.
It's also good for wheat.

Nice, I was unsure because it's so quick...
Got some Pan Cyan plates and some Cubes that I'm going to do some little test grows with. First time with grain, and the plates are the product of my first time playing with agar so fingers crossed.

Just throwing in my pics. It's day 3, I think, since dropping my agar into the jars.
Couple of points:
1) I'm almost certain my grains are too dry, I let them sit for a full 45 mins, but if I try this tek again I'll pay more attention to them and maybe leave them longer.
2) I stupidly had the lids done up tight in the PC so the vacuum made the jars a PIA to open, and when they did pop they sucked air in. Most of them I was able to wrestle open in the SAB so I hope they work out, one or two needed to be taken out the SAB and open in a towel, so I'll see how they turn out.
All in all an easy tek but I will try the more traditional apporach next time.
Would love a comment on how the grains look hydration wise, they don't look super different to SBJ's grains in the OP, but then they look way dry compared to other rye I've seen pictures of.

Followed this tek yesterday and let my jars cool in the pressure cooker overnight. Just took them out and gave them a shake, and they look perfect. Just one or two popped grains in each jar. I also mixed some coffee grounds in with my rye, we'll see if that makes a difference.

Seems like these grains turned out just about perfect. No wet spots, just a few drops of condensation. 9 days later, I've got a jar that's almost completely colonized.

Thanks for your Tek! I just wanted to give some feedback after 1 year of using your tek and others. I am using only yours now because it is faster and requires less energy. I made around 60 rye jars of 200 ml and a couple of rye bags and it always provided a proper moisture. The only differences is that I stir a bit the grain when I add gypsum before the 45 min incubation in hot water. I also put the grain when water reaches boiling (no need to measure the temperature, bubbles showing up mean the water is near 100°C). That makes the process even easier. I notice few explosed grains but that never seemed to be the reason of contamination.

Thanks for the write up, giving it a go now. Had such great results with FooMan's WBS recently that I had to try with rye. Peace

Well after 2 shakes of my rye grain they look perfect not wet at all. I tried whole oats tonight with same method. I soaked them for 30 minutes once I put them in the boiling water.
Rye after 1 shake I shook again 1 more time after this
After setting over night before inoculation rye looked like this.
Oats tonight

Is gypsum really needed for wheat? Never bought it.

This is solid, the drying time def takes a while, i mean not terrible but any time saved is best.
I guess your only really saving the steam drying time and the rinsing time.
It takes me about 45 mins to boil grains ( i dont soak )
* Wouldnt you still want to rinse though? the rinse seems very beneficial to get all that extra crap out.
Either way im doing this tomorow, thank you !

This tek is solid as a motherfuckin brick shit house yall
It never occurred to me to rinse it cold after the lower temp soak hydration, but this is key.
With wheat, doing 195f water for 1.5 hour and rinse cold with the gypsum on top just like in the tek, makes really nice stuff I'll post some pics later I'm making a batch right now.
