Cable
    #2046591 - 10/27/03 03:36 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Ok so i have just moved into a new house and it has a cable lead. All i did was connected a normal ariel lead to it and hooked this up to my t.v as it has a built in cable receiver. Now the problem is its happly picking up some channles but the others it cant quite tune into properly Now i know that these are not encrypted or anything its just cant seem to tune in properly. Almost like bleed over from other stations is there anything that can be done to clear the picture up.

You could try paying for it rather than stealing the service.

Well I am not stealing it as some channels are given away for free anyway. Its just my t.v isnt good enough to receive some channels. I am not useing any type of illegal receiver or decoder device. My t.v just able to automaticaly able to tune in to some t.v station. While others are just out of range of it tuneing frequency. All i was wondering was how to clear the signal up legaly and not by buying illegal decoding equipment. I do not want to steal only receive what is not encrypted.

Well, most of your premium channels are going to be encrypted, if that's what you mean, so I guess you're out of luck there. But a few channels are better than none! I live in an area where only one channel can be recieved over the air, so you have to have cable, unless you're a big Teletubbies fan.

I can't be the only one that likes to kick back, smoke a J, and watch teletubbies...

I think we have two or three here, but I don't watch TV anymore.  Mr. lightning stuck my house and let the magic smoke out of the TV... I missed it for about a month, but after that I haven't looked back.  It amazes me how much more time I have in my week.

Unless the system is very different there, then there is no free cable. If that's the case, and you aren't paying.... you are stealing.

sounds to me like basicly what your doing is using the cable thats running out your house and up to the pole as an antenna. Your just picking up brodcast and thats why its so crappy, attach a real antenna to the cable and you should get a decent picture. Ive never heard of a cable compnay giving away channels for free.

But to another odd cable occurence, if i unplug the cable from my tv and have it on fox (cable 3 - brodcast 32) and pull out the cable fox still come in. Im guessing it has to do with the freqeuncys each channel are supposed to be on when you adjust the catv and antenna settings.

When you pay for basic cable all they do is hook a cable up to your house, and then if you want the premium channels you have to rent their box which decodes them. If you stop paying for the cable, then they have to physically come to your house and remove the feed cable. This is a pain in the ass for them and they can be really lazy about it, so you can get free cable this way for a few months. They probably just haven't realized that nobody is going to pay the cable bill for the house anymore. I know people that have gotten free cable for months this way. The problem is, that they have a way of bouncing a signal to your house to see if anyone is using the cable. If they see that it is in use they will eventually come and disconnect it. There are illegal devices that you can buy to make it undetectable, but they upgrade their technology all the time. Just be happy that you have free cable for a while, it probably won't last forever. As far as I know, there are no "free" cable channels, so it will probably eventually get turned off. The channels that you cant tune in properly are the premium channels that are encrypted. You have to pay extra for these or buy a descrambler from the black market. They upgrade this technology too though, so any illegal descrambler you buy will only last a year or two, or at least that's what happened to mine. There is no other reason that the channels wouldn't come in clearly. Cable doesn't work like an antenna. If it's a bad picture, then either your tv is fucked or the cable company wants it to be that way. A scrambled image looks just like you described, so don't plan on tuning them in unless you buy a box.

Maybe but i have used sky (sat) in the past and digital and the encrypted channels are totaly scrambled in a way that no images of any kind can be seen, there isnt even any sound. There is also free channels via sky and digital but you could be right as cable is diffrent.

I have used an older t.v with a built in tuner for cable ect and it can pick up some channles that the other t.v cant. I just thought it was a tuner problem not encryption. But all i was trying to get was mtv the sound is there and so is the picture almost except its flickering by Horizontally and Vertically and is slightly distorted. When fine tuning i can get an image sometimes except its in black and white and a bit snowey.
But as i said i dont want to steal cable just receive what alredy comeing.

But it probably dosent matter much anyway i am gona get cable internet and will probably pay for some channels as soon as my student grant comes through anyway in jan.
