The Motherwich (update: The Meatwich & steak recipie).
    #2045611 - 10/26/03 10:03 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

The sandwich, one of the staples of the worldwide diet.  In it's simplest
form, merely two slabs of bread slapped around some type of filling.  In
my form, The Motherwich :rocket:

I start with what you see here:
  • Italian Dry Salami
  • Sliced Turkey
  • Sliced Pepperoncinis
  • Sliced Olives
  • Diced Onions
  • Sliced Jarlsburg Part Skim Milk Cheese
  • Sliced Tomato
  • Sliced Avocado
  • French Bread Roll
  • Mayo
  • Mustard (Grey Poupon country style [whole grain] here)
  • Salt, Garlic Pepper, & E.V. Olive Oil

Here comes the fun part, attempting to
balance all these ingredients in between
the sliced French Roll

We begin with layering the onions, olives,
and pepperoncinis on the mustard coated
bottom roll.

After that we get to maneauver the Jarls-
burg over the chopped goods, topped off
with the sliced Italian Dry Salami

From there we pile on the sliced turkey
and here's a great tip for flavourful wich-
es.  Drizzle a bit of extra virgin olive oil
on top of the tomatos and sprinkle some
salt and garlic pepper over it all

Can't forget those delicious Haas avacados!
I threw a small amount of salt and regular
pepper on these as soon as they were sliced

If I were you, I'd've been calling my ass on
not having any lettuce pictured in the first
pic.  Distress not however, here comes the
motherload of red leaf

The preliminary finish:

Compressed and slightly easier to handle

The Motherwich:

Now let's hear what other toppings make for a killerwich!  Time for me to finish the second half of this mother :spliff:

Oh good lord, I think I am going to vomit.

To make space for that thing.

Actually, I've never gotten the hang of big sandwiches, my lips bust open trying to even eat a whopper, it's quite sad.

Comments: Why diced onions, rings are much easier to handle, won't fall out as much. And why no pesto or garlic??? Should be on anything with tomatoes.

Otherwise, I have to agree with Gabba here.

> Why diced onions

I agree with you that in most cases thinly sliced onions are best for sandwiches.  However, the onion I had was previously cut lopsided, and when I cut it for the sandwich to even it out, I ended up with a really thick side and a really thin side to the cut.  Thus, instead of having a leaning tower of motherwich, I decided to just dice it up and make as even a platform as possible with the black olives and pepperoncinis.

> And why no pesto or garlic???

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the pesto and as such I didn't have any on hand - though I do agree that it can go well on a sandwich of this sort.  So far as garlic, there was some powdered garlic mixed in with the 'garlic pepper' that was thrown on top of the e.v. olive oil coated tomatos.  I didn't add extra real garlic because my tears have been stinging lately - I bought this giant tub of pre-minced garlic and I've been throwin' it on everything so I was content with the ever so slight boost of the simple powder this time

That is one motherfucking sandwich !

I miss American deli's sooo much. The majority of Brits don't have a clue when it comes to good food.

Here is a traditional British sandwich recipe.

Cucumber sandwich:

Take 2 pieces of limp white bread and cut off any remaining crust.

Butter the bread and add 1 layer of cucumber sliced sooo thinly you can see through it.

Add no herbs or seasoning whatsoever and then cut the sandwich into triangles and serve.

Mmmmm, lovely !

Not.

That sandwich  does not have enough meat on it :stash:
I like a sandwich heavy on meat, also prefer mine with romaine lettuce instead of leaf

Yes, but you got France next door and last time I was there I couldn't get enough of their ever so simple yet so very tasty baguette sandwiches.  Now that I'm thinkin' about french bread, the Spaniards know where it's at with their jamon serrano (or village ham) which is aged and sliced thin sometimes placed on top of slices of french bread.  O my god when that shit starts to sweat on the bread you know you want another bite.

Thanks Bi0TeK, for giving me the opportunity to reminice about flavours long past - but yea, I've been to England thrice and haven't had a food there that really stuck in my mind (no disrespect to the uk), and I'll admit I was quite young at the time.  Not to say there aren't good eateries out there to be found by any means.  The worldwide is beautiful - I will continue to make it my mission to travel the world for great food

Also, I'd melt the cheese on that baby a bit. Pop it in a toaster oven then add all the fresh stuff once we get some melt on, and toast the bread a bit too. I like warm sandwiches and stuff.

The Meatwich. [Re: jomama]
    #2094426 - 11/11/03 11:38 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Taking into account as many suggestions as I could, I thought to
myself... how could I make more people happy?  Thanks to the
following comments:
  • Kiafi said, "Too much lettuce, although thats just my meat-crazy part talking."
  • PjS said, "Actually, I've never gotten the hang of big sandwiches"
  • PjS also said, "Why diced onions, rings are much easier to handle"
  • PjS went on to say, "And why no pesto or garlic???"
  • psilocybinjunkie said, "That sandwich does not have enough meat on it  :stash:"

Now with those comments in mind, and an empty stomach.... I
decided to use some of the leftover beef I had from this meal:

Incidently, this beef was made by marinading with a liberal wash
of worcestershire sauce, rosemary, onions, tons (maybe 15 cloves) of
garlic, Ms. Dash salt-free multi-spice seasoning, and pepper.

It sat like this at room temp for a good 45 minutes, following which
I threw 'em in an extremely hot non-stick pan with olive oil in it for
about 1 minute on each side just to lock in the good shit. From there I
turned down the heat to a simmer and let all the juices slowly cook the
beef steaks for about another 5 minutes/side.  BTW, these steaks were
about 1 inch thick, and I did add some "Montreal Steak Seasoning"
(salt base) to the steaks as soon as they hit the pan.  Wanted to wait on
the salt until cooking so it wouldn't draw out the moisture.

The potatos above were first chopped, boiled for about 8 minutes, then
cooked in a saute pan with oil & butter on high heat with the mushrooms
and onions, along with one fresh sliced cayenne pepper, salt, and
perhaps some other things I'm forgetting like Basil.  That process was
done once the onions were translucent and the mushrooms nice and soft.

The corn was just plain old frozen off-the-cob corn that I boiled back to
life with some salt and pepper.

So with two steaks left from the three I cooked in the manner described
above, I decided to make myself a meatwich.  Quite simple really,
all that was required was:
  • Toasting of a french roll
  • Spreading some mustard and mayo on either side of it
  • Slicing some pepperoncinis and onions and placing on bottom bread
  • Slicing some steak against the grain and placing over that
  • Slicing some Sharp Cheddar cheese and liberally putting on top of meat
  • Broiling this halfwich in the toaster to melt the cheese and sizzle the beef
  • Smackin' the top mayo bread on top and chowin' down
