Casing vs. Fruting Cakes
    #2045037 - 10/26/03 03:06 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I'm a noob and I'm wondering if casing substrate works better than fruiting the cakes alone. If so, what are the advantages and what is the best (and least risk of contams) method?

Also, I've got two jars left, is this enough to try a casing method?

yeah, its enough. Casing is better, you get a better yield and in my experiene bigger shrooms. Those are the advantages, that and the fact that you can pick the mushrooms w/out damaging a cake. If you just use cakes you tend to pull off pieces of them when you harvest.

There is a little more risk of contams w/ casing, becase you have to handle the cakes and the casing layer can house contams, but as long as you sterilize the casing layer before applying it and wash your hands you can crumble up the cakes and case them no prob.

Read the faq's. Search for "casing methods" or somthing similar. With some basic reading and research you won't have to ask a question like that.

I just finished first flushes with a single cake casing, and a cake by itself. The results.....

Single cake casing : 50+ grams wet.
Cake without casing : -10 grams wet.

Also I had picked my first flush off the casing before, the first set of pinns come along on the cake.

(just my expirence.)

can i take some cakes that havent yet begun to produce pin heads, and have a very little amount of fluffy mycelium growth on them, and case them? should i re-dunk them first?

oh yeah, the cakes have been sitting directly on the perlite for about 5 days now.
