True enuff
Well it's meant to be tho right ? I mean that's it's purpose...
to feed the restless dis-satisfied masses with stories of
Bliss, Joy, Chakras and a fullfilling life... I mean who wouldn't
find that interesting ?! It's very marketable...

I forgot to mention that I've even experienced my share
of New-Age crap (in fact, probably many peoples share
at that, counting my meditation experiences).
I don't think there is any undoing it tho man...
It's polluted my brain for life
Perhaps years of Scientology will cure me
Maybe I'll go out and seek Swami

I think what really did it for me were my meditative
experiences...

I'm really sorry that you had such negative experiences from all of this, man, but what I myself have gotten involved with has really set myself in a good direction, I have discovered how my mind works and how I can reprogram the negative bullshit out of effectiveness and bring about positive change in my life...

To doubt oneself is to effectively make your life suck.
Peace.

No problem with thinking about the mystical . I think it's my past religous and spiritual feelings that made me as open minded as i am today. 'new age' curiosity is just calling for transcendence, one of the most precious and deadly aspects of the human psyche.

Meditation isn't about re-programming tho man,
it's about un-programming...
It's not Hypnosis, it's an awakening to Reality...
and I get the feeling you're quite happy in your
optimistic dream  and I am truely glad for u
I used to be that way too, and I suspect that
being a bit older than u, I know where u're at right now...
but that might be presumptious of me...
You've never experienced a Truely Traumatic incident
so u don't have the perspective that I have now...and again,
I hope u never do...
I used to be exactly your way, I couldn't relate to people
who had been thro Trauma, but now I've experienced it and I
know what it's like...
Peace :sun:

I wasn't talking about meditation, just your experiences in general. And what I'm talking about isn't hypnosis, it is thought reinforcement.

If optimism is a dream, than so it pessimism. They are both outlooks on life. There is what happens, and what we feel about what happens. Does shit happen that doesn't favour us? Hell yeah. It doesn't mean that I have to let it ruin my outlook on life, because it is my outlook on life that creates the life itself that I am living.

I've had my fair share of truly shit happen to me. Nothing like physical pain, like third degree burns or anything, but a lot of fucked up shit that I have went through.

I can relate to people that have been through trauma. But a person can't be traumatized forever. Knowing what I know about how my mind works and all I know about the power of our thoughts, I know that if I went through a traumatic experience that I would be able to get over it a lot faster than if I would if I knew nothing on the subject and had to deal with this shit on my own.

Basically, concern yourself with what you want. You are the only one in control of your experiences here in this life, so it is up to you to make yourself. If you want to wallow in negative bullshit, then go ahead. It sort of makes life not worth living, doesn't it? (I don't mean to sound harsh, and this isn't entirely directed at you, but the point is strong)
Peace.

new age eh?

I have mixed feeling about it. I think it has positive and valuable aspects but it also has an aggravating way of oversimplifying ideas it borrows from many cultures, and stripping them of thier place/time and significance.

My mom is into quite a few new age ideas and they've helped her heal from her soul-crushing jehovah's witness childhood.

About a week ago I was rather baked and was thinking about how silly New Age was, then I realized that I was making ridiculous ego-based judgements on a path that simply wasn't my prefered route anymore, and who the hell was I to make that judgement? Who am I to have a sense of superiority over New Ageism?

I still can't help but feel that it's oversimplified and in many ways, lacking. But if someone can benefit from it, find something really positive, that a step they have every right to take, and I have no place in trivializing thier experience.

The problem with the new age movement, liek everything else, is that people have exploited it for profit.

"Buy this crystal and increase your energy."

"Buy my book and learn the secrets of Native American medicine women."

"Enter my seminar and I'll teach you to see Aura's which will then help you decide who to be freinds with."

"I channel aliens, and they tell me that the way to spirtual enlightenment is through this and this and this, buy my kit of spirituality."

I think there is some basis to a lot of the new age teachings, I mean you can't go wrong with peaceful meditation if you ask me. BUt it's turned into a materialistic social group, where people buy things in order to feel like they belong to some movement or social entity.

While "new age" practices may be therapeutic, practically none of the ideas expressed by the self professed gurus have any evidence to back them up.

People are often willing to "demonstrate" ideas such as channeling chi or the like, but to claim that the reason someone can focus their strength through meditation may have nothing to do with flowing life energy or whatever you may call it, and more to do with psychology. Just because someone has a demonstration for their idea does not mean that their explanation is accurate.

Maybe this doesn't have a lot to do with new age... but it's an extremely broad term. It covers everything from Oprah style pop psychology, to the manipulative illusionism of Uri Gellar, to the outright swindle of psychic surgery. It's also used to describe a new kind of faith that's becoming popular, the Build-Your-Own-Religion? movement that includes Wicca and other faiths.
