Heads truning black ! ???
    #2044601 - 10/26/03 02:08 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

My dog has been growing on and off for a year or two, and this is her first time casing a cake, and the first time with Gulf Coast strain.
Just stayed simple and did BRF cake and then crumbled it and cased with 100% vermiculite. Humid with perlite and has an auto fan for air exchange.
The shrooms are growing nicely, but the heads of about half of them have been turning black. Not just when they are small, like most abhorts she's seen on cakes in the past. Some grow 3" tall and then start to turn. The stems look nice and healthy, not all skinny and shrivled. Others shrooms are just fine. She's a little concerned that there might be a contam issue since (she can't see the mycelium through the vermiculite)
Is this normal, or is there a problem?

Sounds like too much water. Just an opinion, based on research.
Maybe a Mod has the answer

Don't know abt the RH. She's using water soaked pearlite in in the bottom of a rubbermaid container. Its enough to get some fog on the plexiglass, but the inside isn't completely covered with dropletts, just a little damp.
It's been a while since she's changed out the pearlite and water at the bottom.... could that be an issue?

I just had a few do that today. 2-4 inches tall, fat healthy stem, bullet looking cap, and the cap (only the cap) turned black. It was random too. One over here... one over there... Everything else looks great.

Sure the black spots are not spores? Are the black spots occuring under other shrooms? Other than being black do the caps look ok?

EDIT: Gulfcoast is a fat spore machine, it just loves making spores.

Hats (caps) on my shrooms are black and the shroom stopped growing. They are small. I don't know why that is?

they are aborts.

the mushrooms are not getting enough water; or maybe not enough air, or nutrients, or they may be exposed to unsuitable humidity levels.

how deep is your substrate layer? how deep is your casing layer? what is the moisture content of the casing layer? what is the humidity? how big is your terrarium? how often do you fan it?
