A Mycologist? Whats That They Ask??

I was just curious to know where one could better themselves (college or school) in the field of mycology? Also what type(s) of job opportunities are there for a mycoman? What other options are there for someone thats very interested in this field, but dosn't necessarly have to be mycology (ie- work in laboratories)? I have been researching and active in the shroom world for a few months now and quite frankley I can't imagine getting a job for what I am studying right now, once I finish my degree I really want to go straight back to school for somthing I am really going to enjoy doing the rest of my life. Thanks for your help.

Penn State is known worldwide for their mycological department. Read more here: http://mushroomspawn.cas.psu.edu/
That link will take you to their spawn labs page (which is also highly respected) But if you're serious, I'm sure you can contact someone on their mycology program.

There are often local mycology groups where amateurs and professional get together and hunt, discuss, etc... That might be a good place to start.

Where do you live.
Most Botany departments at many major Universities have mycology programs. Christiansen wrote a good book on shroom mycology used at many schools for teaching course s on mycology. But remember there are also many sundry fields interlinked into mycology. Pharmacology of shrooms, cultivation, Identification, taxonomy, culture work, every student who takes such courses applies theirselves to a different aspect of the field. Some go into molecular mycological studies, some into ethnomycological studies. Chemical and toxicology of shrooms is another sundry field int he world of mycology. It would delpend on where your interest lies.
If people are sincere aboot learning these different aspects of shroom studies then they are the ones already in school doing so.
And as noted about, Mycological societies are a good place for a begginer to learn about shrooms in the amature field.

I currently live in GA. But I want to emphasize that where I live now holds no boundries on what I really want to accomplish (I am willing to move just about anywhere to do so). Are there any societies that I might want to know about in my area? Thanks again for the help.

I think I really answered most of your question in t my post abouve. i listed the different fields od study, all which have related jobs. If yu stay in school towards any of those goals then grants are available to further your studies in any direction you want to go.
mj
Without the schooling what the heck would h you really be looking for.
If its in just cultivation then there are a lot of books, you learn how to grow edibles, get a state liscense to sellthem to others and build a business like many do with edible cultivation.

How succesfull could one (range) be doing bulk grows (on a production scale) growing and distributing Gourmet Mushrooms? I mean ofcourse there would be alot of production and planning but how would one go about getting the business?? I am confident in my learning of the cultivating process; the main thing I would be worried about it actually getting rid of all the edibles once they are grown. I am talking atleast 2 years down the road; also anyone interested in going into the business?? LOL. Anyways with tons of planning, the correct procedures planned out, and the money for the initial investment where would one begin to seriously get into the mushroom cultivation business? Thanks again all. (the offer to go into the business may seriously be on the table if all goes well)

As em_bre_O said,
Take Paul Stamet's Mucshroom cultivation courses, both regual and advance after the regular. He conducts them twice a year or so at his farm in Shelton, Washingtron. Here is the URL for his sitew.
