How long does it take for a casing to mature?
    #2042367 - 10/25/03 03:57 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Just out of curiosity, how long does it generally take from the time of crumbling the cakes and mixing it in with the casing substrate to the point where pins begin to form? For a FOAF, it has been 13 days since the point of crumbling, and there are numerous points of mycelium growing through the casing substrate. The casing was put into the terrarium 6 days ago... is he getting ahead of himself and getting impatient? Thanks...

once you get hyphal knots...small hard looking acumulations of mycelium on the surface, pins are only a day or two away.

heres some knots.

Huxley once had to wait a full 3.5 weeks. Yikes. But worth the wait of course, for he saw things for what they were.

I thought that you didnt want the mycelium to come to the surface and become hard... Isn't that called overlay?

You are correct in that a casing should be fruited before the mycelium reaches the surface.

Overlay is when mycelium covers the surface of a casing and is then subjected to trauma causing the surface mycelium to die, thus sealing the surface.

Mycelia on the surface of a casing is not necessarily overlay but the conditions are set for it to BECOME overlay.
