argentinian/uruguayan mate is usually TOO bitter, they're for cold water or milk use. you want brazilian mate dude. they're bitterer and have no increase in potency nor nothing. just for the hardcore takers.

Isn't Brazilian mate the "smoked" kind? I usually drink Argentinian (with hot water) and I like it

yerba mate is never smoked. in argentina they take it with milk instead of water. hot water is from the south of brazil... well... anyways, hope it's not the bitter shit, those ones suck!

Perhaps its not the Brazilian mate that tastes like camp fire then. Some mate does, perhaps its the Paraguayan stuff. According to this pagesome mate are indeed smoked. Some mates I've bought have a very distinct smoke flavor and aroma.

i did look for mate smoking on your page and didn't find. actually i've found this:
'Preparation The most versatile beverage known to man! Check out the many ways you can prepare and enjoy Guayak? Yerba Mat?.'
beverages are liquids to be drunk, YBC. no flame but how lame! it is as lame as to say 'snort hemp and smoke cocaine'! at least for me who was born where mate is widely used...

hehe, I'm talking about smoke drying. Some mates have kind of a "camp fire" taste and aroma, some have absolutely not. Very big difference. When drunk of course, I don't smoke mate

Quote:
Once the leaves come out on the other side of the sopecadora, they are moved to the barbacoa where they are smoke-dried at a low temperature in the traditional Paraguayan method for 24 hours. The inside temperature reaches about 150 degrees farenheit (66 celcius). While the mat? is drying, the indigenous people enter inside the chamber and rotate the leaves by hand to ensure even exposure for optimum flavor. This process utilizes special hard woods which burn cleanly and produce a distinct flavor.
Personally I'm not too fond of the "smoke tasting" mates.

oh yeah, mate is dried in that way usually! i've checked out here the WORST ever mate brand... it's SARA. it's the bitterest i've ever tried... from Montevideo, uruguay. nice place, shitty mate! =) as for the mate flavours, they're very personal as any taste... i like better the 'green' fresh feeling ones rather than the smokey ones... but thats me. =)

try with hot water water remut, it's much tastier than milk (uck). =) try not to put sugar and enjoy it like that... traditionally only the women take it with sugar... i'm serious! =) it's not really bitter after you get used to. it becomes sweet (without sugar). =) goes well with a joint or an organic nicotiana (glauca/rustica are my favs) (smoked!). :P

Nah, in Argentina we drink mate with hot water. Well, actually I don't like mate, but my family drink it all the time. It's not psychoactive, though Some people drink it bitter and some add suggar. Rah, if you want a bombilla or mate let me know and I'll see if I can send you one.

I drink Guayaki Yerba Mate on a daily basis. The orange blossom and magical mint are astounding. I enjoy mine hot with a little bit of lemon flower and orange mint and lemon balm. Great stuff and 2 oz. for only 4 bucks, gotta love it.
By the way tomas, I would be VERY interested and would pay QUITE handsomely for some fresh mate leaves and/or seeds(man, that would be great). Let me know.

I have a bag of this...
And its lasted quite awhile. (and when its gone I will pick up another)
I DONT drink coffee, I drank it for years , but when I quit it was after drinking it almost daily for months, and a quite a bit of it,over time I didnt like it anymore, I didnt like the effects, but hey at a job where I worked with some goof all day, drinking coffee with some french vanilla and sugar was the only thing that kept me sane, although I would feel bad later, (digestion) ,(mental irritablity) (and a lack of good sleep)(sometimes a migriane
Thus, fuck coffee, I say
But I like Yerba, I know it has caffine, but it has more then that, and for less then $5 dollars, why not try it?? I love it, and I dont like ANY stimulants. (its not speedy per sa, but its nice, and its tastes good to, although if you soak to long it can taste a little strong, almost bitter, but if not its like a nice earl grey.

I don't know about smoked mate, but toasted mate is very popular in some areas of Brazil (like Rio and S?o Paulo). We use it to make a very good tasting iced tea. Smells like green mate, but the taste is very different. Also, IME, it's psychoactive qualities are much milder.
I haven't tried Cruz De Malta, but I've tried Rosamonte, which is also from Argentina. Very bitter, but also very potent, more than any brazilian mate I've drank. When I drank enough, I would get quite euphoric, alert, optimistic, motivated, etc. One other advantage is that it, unlike most brazilian mate, is not finely ground, so it never blocks the bombilla. Unfortunately, it's all gone. =(
