Helped Saved a man who almost drowned in the canal, today. * 13
    #20438317 - 08/18/14 04:46 PM (9 years, 8 months ago)

I was riding down the canal when I see from a distance a woman waving her hands and yelling 'help, please help' so I speed up and get to her, a special needs elderly man accidently drove his electric scooter into the canal (he said he wasn't paying attention and got too close to the edge)

The lady said she was in her backyard (the canal is behind her house) gardening when she heard someone screaming help! help! im drowning! so she jumped the wall, idk how because she looked pretty old, there was no saving the electric scooter, but she was trying to pull him up on the bank but just couldn't do it.

I rushed immediately to him, grabbed him under the arms and just pulled (think I twinged my neck/shoulder) he was a bigger dude, but got him up on the ground. told him to stay laying there but he got up and was stumbling around. I handed my phone to the lady to call 911 and I quickly went to acess him. Had him sit in the shade, he was covered in mud and canal water. He was crying. He said "2 more minutes, I swear I was going to drown".

Police came, ambulance came shortly. I can't stop shaking, it was such a surreal experience. I'm so glad and thankful that we were able to save his life. I was at the right place at the right time, same with the other lady. thank god.

EDIT:
Took photo down since it had a police officers face in it lol

These instances of immediate, thoughtless altruism are a testament to good human nature. There are good people out there who don't want bad things to happen to other people. Thanks for the reminder and the good deed.

It was such a scary situation, but I was able to keep my mind from freaking out and  i just kept saying 'viva, calm down, this man is gonna be okay, just keep your cool'

I'd like to find out what hospital he went to, I'd like to go see him.

the police said there may be a chance of me and the other lady being on the news but I would politely decline lol

Hope your shoulder and neck isnt too fucked up. I've seen way way way too many cases of things like this where the persons neck and shoulder is just fucked for a LONG time because of it.

Huge triumph. I think with shit like that you're always way more calm at the time than seems possible in retrospect. Well done, anyway.

I'll take some ibuprofen 800mg and i'm sure i'll be okay.

@John- they showed up  because they wanted to take statements from me and the other woman to get the story straight as to what happened. I honestly dont know why the police showed up. Maybe they thought he was drunk? Idk

ambulance came about 10 min later after the police arrived. I'm gonna try to contact that one lady if I can find her and see if there are any updates.

When drugs / and or alcohol may be involved, police have to arrive and make sure the situation is safe before the ambulance can do anything.

Haha, what's the ibuprofen for? You really fucked yourself up pulling him out or something? For real, it's shocking how many people just roll past this kind of shit and don't even try and help so much as you did what any decent person would it still trumps 85% of people.

I'd ice it instead to be honest.

Also, police LITERALLY have nothing better to do, that's why they showed up

Like I said above, I've seen more than a dozen dozen(12x12) people who have a shoulder or neck issue that is persisting YEARS after helping someone like this, or helping lift a patient if they're a nurse or something.

The police showed up cause Viva threw some guy in a river just so she could make a thread about it. Shocking.
