mixing substrates
    #2043162 - 10/26/03 12:38 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

If I were to mix several jars of different crumbled colonized substrates into one rather large (2 x 5ft) casing mix, would the strains fight for dominance or would they co-exist and fruit happily? My other question is does the size of the substrate particles after crumbling have any affect on their growth? too big too small? thanks.

its kinda like puttin, cowboys and indians on the prairy.

the size of the peices has no effect on growth. the more abundance, the more spawn points.

golly gosh twistedJay you do sound like a real killa, but im not sure if i agree with you.
Do you think the cowboys and indians would connect via clamp connections?
Im not so sure myself.

i would think that you would want to keep the strains seperate from each other.. they wont fight each other, but if you spread around a bunch of diff. strains, you'll get a bunch of little shrooms. if you isolate each one, you'll probably get better yields.. so you can mix them in a large casing tray, just keep the strains in their own little corner.

They won't "fight," but if they're incompatible and can't mate they'll be branching around each other and won't have an efficient way to distribute nutrients. Thus you'll have really small shrooms, if any, like starseed said.

What about if grains are inoculated with different spors but same strain. Is the genetic of spors really important.(just a silly question)?
