Monster Mushroom - WT^ [a must see!]
    #20394699 - 08/09/14 07:34 AM (9 years, 7 months ago)

This is the strangest mushroom I've found here in Finland. No idea what it could be. At a distance I saw a white muchroom on a dead mossy trunk. On closer inspection it had a thick very soft stipe and  cap with many wart-like projections, of various sizes from 1-5mm. Some of these warts were 'open'(?) and were amber-coloured inside. The cap was slightly slimy and very putrid (like deacying fish). I did not collect since I was sure to find such a unique example in the book, but I did not. I went again this time to collect it. Flesh was spongy amber-brown (like bread). I don't think there were gills.  Entire body snow-white and soft.

What is this monster fungus please?

Habitat: Leaf litter of forest over a trunk. (might be just from leaf litter)
Height:  3-4cm
Stipe length: 2cm ca.
Stipe cross section: Irregular
Stipe descr: White, fibrillate, spongy flesh
Cap diameter: ca. 4cm
Cap descr: White, granulose, irregular margin with several irregular warts of various sizes, mostly 3-6mm, some stiptate. Few were dehisced (like small ascocarps or pits) with an orange-brown interior
Gills type: not sure?
Spore print: n/a

Very very curious (is it a muchroom being parasitised?)

Yes, that mushroom is being parasitized, most likely by a Hypomyces species.

There were a lot of Tylopilus around - maybe this was the victim! The keys in the link above are actually putting my guess on H. chrysospermus. Pity a trashed the specimen!

If you are looking for friends in Finland you could also contact Mikael who just set up mushroom-central.com (it is not really up-and-running atm but he would probably appreciate uploads).

The two Hypomyces reported from finland in a rather authority site are H. aurantius and R. rosellus. Due to the yellowing formations it has to be the first one. Would love to have support on this!
