WBS questions
    #2042587 - 10/25/03 07:42 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Sup

Some WBS was soaked for 2 days now. This seems excessive -- but thats what happened. The first time WBS was used, water wasnt changed till rinse and also seemed to start fermenting after like 12 hours. This time, bleach water was changed every 6 hours or so(hehe) till the water stopped showing bubbles -- and now it still sits there. Looks like its sprouting, and it does smell kind of fermented/changed smell.

Someone is wondering if sprouting WBS is any good still to use, and wondering about the smell and fermentation that seems to happen.

No I would not use sprouting WBS. Throw it out and go spend a few bucks on a new bag. Peace!

Fermenting = OK

SPROUTING? Are you sure? Post a pic, maybe? Are you sure it's not just turning to mush and splitting/ooxing?

Don't use it. In the jar, the sprouts will get no light and will rot.

hey everyone,

i found myself in a similar situation today with sprouting birdseed. I PCed and then innoculated anyways i have plenty of spores so i dont really have to worry.

my question is how do the sprouts withstand being pressure cooked?
Id think that they wouldnt assuming they sprouted before being sterilized. if thats the case they arent going to rot due to lack of light they are already dead.

if mushrooms can be colonized on things like straw and a few select types of hay then why would the sprouting seeds be any better or worse?

my fish has innoculated sprouted WBS and not had any issues, it was just a little harder to break up initially.

someone went ahead and made a few jars of WBS up that had just barely began to sprout. have to wait on results.

is the seed or sprout more nutritious to the mycelium?

Rot is caused by bacteria. Something in a bacteria free environment should not rot, so your jars should be fine.
