How dangerous is black pin mold??
    #2042516 - 10/25/03 07:04 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

My friend emptied his 1 of his jars into a garbage bag and he saw a small cloud of black spores come out of the bag. He also got his hands covered with the spores a few times while cleaning out the jars, but he washed his hands repetedly.

You'll be fine.  As long as you don't consume any.

Yeah, getting spores on you is no big deal.

it depends on one's respiratory strength, someone with a condition, say asthma, is at a higher risk of illness from black pin. Handle it as safely as possible, NEVER smell clearly contaminated media.

If and when I get a contam'd jar I always PC it before opening it up.  Sometimes if it is contam'd real bad I would open it up in a bucket of 10% bleach water so as to wet the mold so it doesn't fly all over the place.  I don't fill the jar up just let some of the bleach water get in and then close it up and shake.  You DO NOT want to breathe the stuff in this concentrated state.  JMHO.
I hate dealing with any contam.  It is one of the dreaded chores in this hobby  :frown: .

Yeahhhh...  Mold spores aren't too terribly great for you.  I wouldn't flip out if I breathed in a bunch, but I'd, mmm, respect it anyway.  Just use common sense, we breath in nasty spores all the time, but we don't need to breath in a nice batch of concentrated Death Spores.

No biggy.  You'll live.  Just don't chew your finger nails   Or more importantly don't open those dang jars near your other 'projects'  Hehehe, don't need them getting the Black Death too.

when you get a clearly contam jar try this fun way to neutralize it. 0pen the jar and poor in some peroxide. I did this before and my jar went nuts, almost like a vin/baking soda reaction. Dont put a tight lid on the jar durring this reation and your all good.
