1:2 coir/verm monotube UPDATE: NO PINS AFTER 14 DAYS :(

Any clarification you guys can provide would be awesome.
Summary 5 pints of RGS fully colonized with PE via multispore 10 pints of Frank's Simple Coir/Verm substrate. 1 Monotub with holes taped (I went 1:2 because of some timing issues, fully aware I could have stretched it out a little more) Mixed spawn/substrate on Saturday substrate/spawn mix is 3" deep NO plastic/waxpaper/bubble wrap etc. on top of substrate; box closed with lid, holes taped, trashback covering it.
This is my first time working with coir, I made 2 mistakes (that I know of):
- during my 2nd batch of pasteurizing substrate 3 of the 10 total jars reached sterilization temps (~170+) for several minutes.
- I think I'm on the wet side after mixing everything together: should have strained spawn better, and hydrated coir less.
I'd like to confirm that the growth you see below is healthy, get recommendations on when to case (this is PE, I know Frank recommends casing PE to prevent blobs). I've shown the wall of the monotub to demonstrate moisture levels. beads of water form but don't roll down on their own... I know this is too wet, but I don't want to introduce FAE just yet... advice?
Thanks for any insight you can provide.

That looks exceptionally healthy, and when moisture is running down the sides of your monotub it doesn't mean it's too wet. It's actually a big part of why that liner is there. I'd say case it right now. Great job so far, man.

the temps on your coir doesn't matter, but too much water should only make it colonize slower. As long as its colonized and the sub isnt waterlogged or drowning I think you should be good.

FrankHorrigan said: I cased my MS penis envy substrates at 100% using pasteurized 50/50+. For this 50/50+ mix I used jiffy mix organic seed starter, right from the bag. It was hydrated to field capacity and pasteurized, allowed to cool and then applied.
This colonized for 4-7 days until 20-30% colonization of the casing layer.
Then I fruited them.
According to Frank you should case it now but let it colonize until 20-30% of the casing is done. I'd take his advice any day of the week
It looks good as far as I can see, no telling what might pop up later but for now it looks good IMO.

tub looks great
don't sweat the partial sterilization thing bud, coir is pretty damn tough to contam without introducing bad spawn.
honestly no need to pasteurize it either...pouring boiling water into a 5 gallon bucket works just fine!
just to prove it to myself, I let coir prepared this way sit in the bucket for 2 months & no molds germinated

So I put this tub into fruiting conditions just over 2 weeks ago, and I started fussing with it like a dumb ass shortly after
- room temperature
- in a walk-in closet with a fan pointed at wall next to tub
- 2x 6500k daylight LEDs pointed at top-- on a roughly 12/12hr cycle
- 2 holes at substrate level on long sides, 1 hole at each end near top
- holes dialed in boss-style bottom holes stuffed tight with polyfill
- Not cased-- I HAD another 8 jars on the way and decided to hold off since I didn't already have the raw ingredients.

Pretty sure I fucked up the moisture levels in either direction: I thought it was too wet at first so I fanned it for a couple days, then it got too dry (like all of my fruiting attempts do) and I misted the hell out of the walls and substrate, which turned into tiny pools of metabolites that I blotted up with a paper towel the next morning. I put on a bubble wrap casing for the last few days, which seems to have stabilized the the humidity near the surface, but I don't know if the moisture level of the rest of the sub is correct. The substrate FEELS slightly damp and springy, my fingers came away clean when I touched it gently.
I realize that I should have left it the fuck alone ( )-- but what to do now? Most of the forum advice is to dunk it for a few hours and drain off the excess water... I don't see any dead giveaways for contamination, but it's absolutely possible (I did a G2G with the other jars, 1 of which seems to have contam'd. The spawn was mixed evenly, so I believe it's fully colonized, but I only let it consolidate for a couple days before putting it into "fruiting conditions"
This is my 4th failure-- each time I've gotten fully-colonized, *seemingly* healthy mycelium all the way to fruiting conditions and then they just never. fucking. fruit. but they don't contam either. It's like some bastard is sneaking into my closet every night and giving them a light misting of fungicide and sad feelings.

PE are stubborn when first growing them. I mean fucking stubborn. DO NOT DUNK IT!! Leave it alone. Give it another week. What ultimately happened to your failed tubs? Contamination or did you prematurely throw them away?

Oh fuck I didn't even notice you were growing PE. They can take fucking forever to pin. I would not sweat it at all.

Everything always dries the fuck up until it's solid or inevitably contams. This is my first attempt with bulk tubs. In the past I've tried cakes and gave the violet tek a whirl using an SGFC. I live in Texas and my apartment is particularly dry, which may be contributing to this?

What are the knots you're seeing? If you look at my first post, you can see that before putting this tub into "fruiting" they surface of the sub was covered in healthy, moist white bumps. most of these have dried out and yellowed over the last 2 weeks.
What is the correct moisture content of mycelium in order to allow pin formation? Should I leave on the bubble wrap?

You could always run a humidifier in the opposite end of the room on a timer?

In the winter the RH in my house never gets above 20% and my tubs do fine. The rooms humidity has very little effect on tubs IME.

I totally get that the local environment of the tub (vs the room) has the ultimate impact on fruiting success, but for the love of God what is the correct moisture level of the sub?

Those were not knots, knots start out very tiny, the head of a pin. Your sub does look a little dried out and maybe bacterial, but I bet you see pins in 3 days if you stop fucking with it.

Should be field capacity. The sub should be moist but not saturated. If you grab a handfull it should feel moist but not dripping. When you squeeze it a trickle of water will come out.

Gotch. Regarding the moisture of the sub I meant the colonized sub *at this point* sorry for the confusion and thanks for your advice, I'm dyin' over here

Since I've started using clean liners I've noticed the top sometimes colonizes way faster than the bottom or sides, sometimes it takes my tubs a few extra days to reach full colonization after the top looks done
