The title says it all. WHat have you guys found to be the quickest route from innoc. to picking?
Also how much do you think casing delays picking over the birthday cake route?

PF tek is about as fast as it gets.
Other than that, make sure your temp is right and you pick a fast colonizing strain.
Still, growing for the first time is always a test of patience.

If he is a first time grower, I'd bet money he'd have quicker success with cakes.
Especially if he is impatient.

I completely agree, from what I've read (except I started out casing.) He asked what's the quickest way, though -- the quickest way isn't always the easiest. Also -- casing isn't always quicker.

Well, I am implying that casings are easier to screw up if your primary intention is a quick grow. You will love your casing to death trying to get it to hurry along. It is much harder to love a cake to death.
I'm willing to bet your intention wasn't the fastest grow possible micro. Wackytron is trying for a hasty grow.
The quickest path to shrooms for a n00b is the pf tek.
The speed of your casing depends greatly on your fruiting chamber and ph levels. Also, you want even growth. You have to maintain the proper moisture. And, if a casing is screwed up, you can lose more cakes than you would if a single cake contamed.
Wackytron, have you read the PF tek?
This is the starting point for a reason.
It is fast, and relatively easy. It, also, opens the door to many different things.
My problem is this: Mycology requires patience. It also requires patience and patience.
If you WANT to grow quickly, your odds of screwing up greatly increase. This is why a casing could be a problem.
If you simply want to grow, start with the PF tek. You can case some cakes, dunk some, dunk and roll others, birth a few and grow a couple jars invitro. This way, you can find out for yourself what is truely the quickest way to grow.
Most people fail on their first grow attempt.
Wackytron, I hope you aren't trying to grow quickly for the wrong reasons. If you are trying to grow quickly to grow discretely, you shouldn't be growing.

Are you aking me if I think casing is the fastest way to grow? I think it is, if you do it right.
I completely agree with you, though, cervantes -- from what I've read people have problems with casing.

I've got a couple of cakes that I just birthed into the grow chamber so it's not like I just got the spores and haven't read. I've been experimenting with other teks. I had problems with honey water but I've got some PC growing very nicely.
Where do you think most people go wrong in casing?

What problems with honey-water? Take into account proteins will denature when sterilizing so you might get some precipitation/cloudiness.

I wasn't sure where the problem was cause I had a little problem with my heating system which baked a bunch of my cakes. Out of 9 cakes, 2 died completely and the rest recovered. Some more quickly than others. But of the two jars of honey water one grew some myc but there was a bunch of brownish looking growth too. I let this jar sit for a while thinking it might just be the honey proteins but it never really grew too much. The other jar grew some small strands (maybe 2-3 mm) that were assumed to be myc. but the growth in this jar was severely limited. not even a light covering of the bottom. The jars were tossed after about 4 weeks.

If you're using a heating pad make sure the bulb of your thermometer is directly on the source of heat (Is this in the FAQ?? I'm not sure if it is, but it seems to be a common problem.)
Brown seems like contamination. If you were following the tek (and used the right concentration) and only sterilized @ 15 psi for ~ 15-20 minutes I don't see the reason growth should be really inhibited....
If you're having contamination issues a septum plug can be used in a mason jar so you can inject through a syringe.

Interesting. I hope to switch to a fish tank heater soon. right now I've got it setup to run at about 81F. Thats as close as I can get to 86.

Casings are quicker because you are actively modelling the growing season of the mushroom by incubating mycelium, mixing spawn, and casing and cold shocking. With cakes all you can do is roll them in vermiculite to protect them and they are far more sensitive to conditions (not that they don't yield nicely if the conditions are met). Regardless, heating and humidity control are the quickest way regardless of strain or TEK.
