possible pan sub??
    #2036175 - 10/23/03 02:33 PM (18 years, 9 days ago)

I found this mushroom today while picking liberty caps in a cow/horse pasture. It caught my eye because it resembles pictures of panaeolus subbalteatus I have seen. The cap has a dark ring around the margin, the gills are close together and a dark brown colour....the stem is off white with a red tinge....seems kinda brittle and somewhat fibrous. No blueing as of yet and I am still working on the spore print....so what do you think? could these be my first pan subs...

and this is biggest liberty cap I ever saw....just thought I would throw this in here too

yeah  it was quite old and going a bit black so I left it in the field

....can anybody help with the pan. id.  The spore print came out jet black....does that mean it's a pan sub?

Those are subs but those are also the worst unhealthiest liberty caps I have ever seen. It is not good to pick them when they are int he raotting stage.

not healthy at all.

Subs usually do not blue.

the reddish brown coloration of the stems in some of them hold back and hide the bluing reaction. The caps eventuyally turn a whitish color in drying to a buff. Very rare in manure. that was cool but the dose is one ounce fresh of three to five grams dry which is a standard clinical dosage according to Hollister et al. 1960 and to Ott 1994.

lol, I know some of those libs are past their best before date. I picked through the bag and chucked out any mushroom that had any indication of rot. The reason for the rotten shrooms is I was picking with friends and we used the same bag. I guess they dont discriminate what they pick because I found a few look-a-likes in the bag as well :shake:, Im using my own picking bag from now on.

ok thanks then

Did you show your friends how to tell the lookalikes? We wouldn't want them to make a mistake and poison themselves.

Happy mushrooming!

yes I explained how to tell the difference several times, I guess they are a bit thick headed  The lookalikes they had were Panaeolus Papilionaceus and also a small ink cap as well. Just to be safe I will check through their bags before they take it home.

now you might not think a spiled mushroom would be so bad, but thik of it as meat, you wouldnt eat spoiled meat.

Uh, I'd be worried about that Pan subb with the light colored gills because that's no Pan subb.

I dunno are you sure it's not a sub. The gills ranged from that colour to chocolate brown to black. All mushrooms I printed (including some lighter gilled ones like in the pic) came out black.

Well... the subs I've always found have black or at least very dark gills.

hmmmm, I found blueing on the very base of the stem where there is mycelium attached so I thinks its them. I dont plan on eating the subs anyways,  just brought them home for fun

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.
