Interesting Syringe Expierience.
    #2040563 - 10/24/03 05:43 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

So... This one guy I know who grows shrooms gos to check his incubator. Which has no drain on the bottom and is made of plastic. Anyways... he opens it up, and it his suprise one of his bigguns had dropped it's spores... Which in turn have formed this cluster/puddle in the water thats gathered on the bottom of the incubator. All the water used in the humidifier is distilled and the incubator is cleaned regularly, so he runs to the fridge and grabs a syringe. Heats the needles, let's it cool... Sticks it in the puddle of spores and sucks em all up. Made the darkest syringe I have ever seen  He then filled up the extra 2 ccs with distilled water and capped it. I will let yu guys know what happned after inoculation.

That syringe is almost certainly contaminated. Remember, there can't be so much as a single bacteria in it. The chances that the water at the bottom of even a very clean chamber is sterile, is very small.

If there was an overabundance of spores in the solution, would the mushroom spores germinate and outcompete the bacteria though? I doubt that there is never a single bacteria microbe in a majority of grow setups and syringes, but I agree, giving bacteria a foothold eitherway is a bad idea in any situation.

Nope.

Bacteria grow at an exponential rate. Even a single bacteria will far outpace spores. A single bacteria incubated at 85F in a nutritious environment and dividing at a rate of once every hour will become over 16 million bacteria in a day and 280 TRILLION in two days. Properly produced syringes are 100% TOTALLY sterile. All commercially produced syringes are guaranteed so.
