One of the most important ingredients is patience. Use lots of it and you'll be fine.
Pick any strain that interests you. One is as good as another.

"If I'm gonna die for a word, My word is Poon-Tang!" -You better know-
Brown Rice Flour = Organic Rice from a local Organic Expensive Grocer Buy it whole and grind it yourself. Jars = Only use the widemouth half pint, the short fat ones not the tall skinny ones. Pet stores = Wonderful places for goldfish and casing supplies.
***Do Not get impatient and screw around with your work. Leave it alone. HANDS TO SELF!***

Can I just say I am chuckling quite a bit right now?
I went to a local health food store looking for BRF but they didn't have any. So I go up to the guy and ask if they ever get any, and he goes, "Oh, we grind it ourselves. I can do it right now, but we only do it in ten pound batches." So I ask him how much that would cost and he says $9.99. For ten pounds of organically grown, freshly ground BRF.
So that's why I'm chuckling.

rye flour should work just as well. and regarding casing,i'd recommend using 60/40 coir/verm.

I'd assume it works just as well. I've never used flour that I bought, but have ground some myself and let it sit for an 8 month period before use, it worked fine. I'm sure the pre-ground stuff is fresher then 8 months.

Pet store. It looks like a brick. Any pet store will have it, say your looking for lizard bedding or snake pedding and they will point it out. It's a red brick essentially, rapped in plastic and covered with a label.

I guess you can get it pre-made, usually it's in a compact brick, and you soak it and it expands to like a trillion size the volume of the brick. Just shave some off with a knife and boil it. It's hard as shit to cut off the brick though, use a wedge like in cutting wood perhaps.

Why do you need to case with anything but plain vermiculite? Meaning, does coco coir add anything special to the casing mix or is it just another way of doing it? Thanks.

Good question. Well I've tried both and I like Coco Coir better. I'm not really sure. Coco coir is a nice organic substance, I don't think it provides any nutrition, certainly not after I boil it for an hour. I know vermiculite is an excellent water retainer as well. I like the coco coir because it is really porous. I mean tons of holes and fluffy coridoors in which to hold air and aid air exchange. Vermiculite sits too plainly and flat. I like the rough porous surface of coco coir. Plus its a wonderful shade of reddish brown. Not that pirite looking gold! haha.

Coco coir is usually 5-7 dollars a brick which provides a bunch. The brick is small but expandes greatly when H2O is added. I'd buy a single brick.
