2nd grow - Koh samui, B+, Treasure coast
    #20398039 - 08/10/14 01:40 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

My first attempt was close to 8 years ago , with only 4 cakes to see what I was getting myself into. Although successful I had just been moving around too much to give it another go. Realising I had basically everything in my possession minus spores and a substrate I decided to give it another go.  I used a basic PF tek recipe and also added bee pollen, and worm castings. I inoculated 6 jrs of each Koh samui, Treasure coast , and B+ using the "oven method" with just over 1cc per jar. In my mind it seemed like a better idea than the glove box method. Worse comes to worse I try again right? haha. I then placed them into  plastic tub with with a heat pad on low underneath the tub, and set it on timer to turn on/off every hour. Temperature seem to be stay between 79.5 and 83.2 between the night/day temp changes. It has only been 4 days and the I am very happy with the growth results so far. After inspection I haven't found any sign of contamination as of yet. i will make sure to update as time goes on. Any suggestions will be noted. I am also still not sure on what type of fruiting chamber I would like to go with. As tempted as I am to case this batch I might replicated this same setup with the remaining spores and experiment with that. Any ideas? I have the equipment to setup an automated FC , but I also have enough polyfill and such for a shotgun. Decisions decision! Thanks!

My first grow was with Koh samui so I figured I would give it another shot from a more serious approach. As far as the SGFC I'm leaning that way!! Again I will more than likely replicate in a few days and try both to compare. Although SGFC seems to be  winner for the first trial. plenty of time to figure that out though. Thanks again!

No problem

My advice would be to say fuck an automated system though  SGFC's out perform in every way shape or form. Cheaper too

Beautiful growth! Oven tek is crap, but it looks like it worked ok for you. No need for the heat mat, room temp is fine for incubating.  SGFC are incredibly simple and work like a charm, don't wast your time building anything more complicated.

I had contemplated the oven tek, but to be honest this experiment it is exactly that. A experiment. Having success with open air and glove box  inoculation, I decided to give it a go. To my surprise still not one sign of contamination! The heating pad is more or less for keeping the tempt. constant as it can be 80+ during the day and near 40's at night. Although I started with the 1hr on/1hr off, I now set the timer according to the forecast. Which may sound timely but only takes less than a minute before I start my day. I'm sure they would be just fine at room temp but in my case the growth seems to be almost doubling per day, so im going to roll with it for this batch but will absolutely be experimenting without the heat pad. With spawn bags in the mail to inoculate the rest of my spores with, The decision has been made to simply keep these as cakes and case with the spawn bag results. Again , happy with the growth compared to the first attempt as I simply put them in a closet and forgot about them until birth. SGFC will be used for this batch but will be doing a side by side comparison later on.

Why did you use the oven tek if you have a sab?

I don't have one at the moment, but I had used one in the past. As stated in the first post, my first grow was close to a decade ago. The SAB wasn't something I moved around with me, nor did I want to build another as I was trying new technique. I am a fan of trial and error

Day 8 -

Temperatures have stayed steady, along with growth. Although I did come across some fluffy green contamination in one of the B+ jars. After further inspection (without opening the jar), I noticed the vermiculite barrier on the top of the jar above the contaminated area was almost non existent, as if it was shifted during/after inoculation. Other than that things seem good.

I lost a total of 5 jars out of the 18, o well! After the jars being fully colonized I let them sit for just over a week, with few jars already showing pinning (whoops!). Tonight I will dunk, and roll(gently) tomorrow evening. I also inoculated a few Rye bags a week later with the remaining Koh Samui and Treasure coast spores to experiment with Monotubs, along with 2 more on the way. I cant help it I like trial and error! Tomorrow I will update with how the SGFC is looking. Any suggestions are greatly welcome!

Time to drill-

Inoculated bags going strong! For experimental purposes I inoculated one bag with a single hole in multiple directions. The other multiple holes in various directions. Both seem to be colonizing equally. No sign of contamination yet. -

There is no foil on any jars (as seen in the pictures) other than the contaminated picture.  The first set was immediately after inoculation, then foil removed.

I had a few "sketchy" cakes I didn't want to take the chance with. I put them in a separate SGFC elsewhere. Tempts are steady at 75f with 91% humidity. mycelium growth seems steady for less than 24 hrs.

Spawn bags going still strong-

Received syringes of Cambodian, Golden teacher, and Creeper. still deciding if I should stick with Rye or go to dung. Hard to say until I proceed with the previous bags.

The nights lately have been dropping to low 50's already, from the usual low 70's.The first two nights i struggled to find a happy medium with the aid of a heating pad I have been able to keep the temps at 71-75. With the RH to 90-92 steadily I still have become skeptical and put my hygrometer(digital..I know..) into a bin with the salt/water to test accuracy. Conditions seem fine, FC being well off the ground for proper FAE, long with 12/12 lighting (both indirect and LED lighting). Due to my 12-14 hour work shifts I'm not able to fan as much as I would wish. I then rigged a hydroton filter to run 30 minutes , every other hour on timer. I'm not sure of the significance of the FAE from this but its better than none at all. Although i'm not using an advanced hygrometer , the 'min/max' results don't seem to fluctuate much. If anyone has any better timer setups please acknowledge me haha :smirk:

The verm. on the perlite is due to a few of them taking a  slight spill moving the FC , I was not impressed! This little guy looks like he took hit, salvageable? was one of the first pins before dunk.

Hydroton -

Two colonizing spawn bags(Koh samui, Treasure coast) have seemed to also "stalled", yet no conditions have changed so I decided to take them from the incubation area to an area with more air flow yet the same temperature (hoping FAE will help). Although a multi grain bag, should I gently mix the back to help mycelium growth or just stop being so impatient haha. The bags were inoculated on 8/21.

Inoculation of two more spawn bags were placed tonight (pictured above), this time after inoculation I mixed the bags up very gently with my fingers to spread the spores in hope of more even mycelium growth. Maybe to rid the clumping of growth, which could be for the worse but i'm trying bit of everything.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you put the proper amount of perlite (at least 3") it will hold RH better. Also a SGFC has plenty of FAE on its own, we fan after misting to create some evaporation not provide FAE. This means your air pump is not doing anything other than messing with the natural function of your chamber.

The SGFC was designed to be fairly automated and should work fine if left alone. A mist and fan in the morning and when you get home should be fine. I have left mine unattended for a week at a time.

FAE won't help in grain jars or bags.  the filter prevents anything except gas exchange from taking place.  if the bag has stalled, mix it/break it up, and smell thru the filter bag.  it should smell like fresh mushrooms, NOT sweet at all.  i can never smell thru jar lids, but bags i can when i mix.  they generate ALOT more heat than jars, so be careful putting them that close together, and in something that retains heat (like the aquarium u have them in).

what did u noc the bags up with, spore syringe?

Understood, I wasn't sure if a container with "stale" air would make a difference with air exchange, as the aquarium it is sitting in has an open top i'll make sure to keep an eye on the temps with the bags. Yes, ll of the spawn bags were inoculated with a spore syringe.
