Swapped polyfill filter in unsteril conditions! Is that ok?
    #2036694 - 10/23/03 05:15 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

One of my quart bird seed jars stalled at around 95 percent. Almost completely white but there were a few stubborn clumps of grain. Im almost positive the reason for this was the lack of air exchange. I noticed how extremly tight the polyfill was stuck in the hole and how there was a lot of excess. The other jars had the polyfill pulled through tight, but not as tight as the stalled jar, interestingly enough the loose jars were 100%.

I tried just to tear out a few strands of the polyfill fibers to loosen it up but I accidentally pulled too hard and out came the whole wad! Quick goat thinkin I reached in my bag of polyfill and crammed some in there and gave it few twists so that it was secure.

Im kind of worried that that second there was no filter that some contams could of snuck in. I sprayed oust a few minutes before. There is no perlite layer, or whatever they do with those pf tek jars. The bare mycellium was exposed to the air.

I think since the jar was just about finished i might be ok since there is little chance of contams getting a foothold. Hopefully with its easier breathing filter it finishes soon.

Whatcha think?

was there any uncolonized substrate on the top, if so then i would think that may be a vector for contams but if it had already been colonized your probably ok.

i would think the mycelieal network be able to fight off any invading contams...

what if the top is completely colonized, but the very bottom isnt. Flipping doesnt help much. Could I just remove the tape from where I innoculated to let some air in?

I removed the tape from the inoculation holes on my wbs jars 2 days after i started to see growth. The growth took off after i did too.

My techinique is not very sterile and i have only had two out of 15 jars contam. The jars that did had straw in them (i wanted to test how viable it would be for bulk)i attribute the contamination to the straw...
