My family have been practicing voodoo for many generations. It was introduced to my family in a slave camp in Louisiana where my family (being native American - Cherokee displaced from Appalachiah) had been held for many years.
After the camp my family was moved to a reservation in Oklahoma, they lived there until my great grandmother married a white man and moved to California. My mother moved to the north east following work where she had me.
I have only met one voodoo devotee before, he had a tattoo of Legba's veves on his neck otherwise I wouldn't have known, we have a growing Spanish population and have run across Santeria members though.

I needn't be taught the veracity of matters magickal, but perhaps others will read this (thanks for the elaboration). Rada vs. Petra schools, veves, poppets (dolls), etc. are things I am familiar with. As for the ethnobotanical work of Wade Davis (the 'Zombi Medicine'), I've read The Serpent and the Rainbow, which the movie was obviously a fantastical elaboration of. As a matter of interest, a former childhood friend was friends with Nick, the son of Richard Evans-Schultes, the great Harvard ethnobotanist. My old friend related his visit to their home which was a virtual museum, when he was employed in Boston as a molecular biologist/genetic engineer. Evans-Schultes was Wade Davis' mentor. Ever read this?: http://www.amazon.com/Voudoun-Fire-Melita-Denning/dp/0875421865/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406220133&sr=8-1&keywords=voudoun+fire There are photos (before Photoshop) of bell-shaped illuminated L'was descending the poteau-mitan in the peristyle.

As do I. I agree with most of what you posted, I'm more surprised of what you didn't post, but it's all good, btw I wanna +1 you but don't know how to. Voudun/Voodoo to me is a syncretic lifestyle, with that said I practice it as well as Hinduism and am also a quasi-Rasta, so I have many Loas and ancestors to pray to. All I have to do is set my alter up for my ancestors, libations and prayers are always sent up to nature/my ancestors.
Love and Peace.

Yea I just stuck to dispelling misconceptions because I believe other than that I'm not one who should be teaching voodoo. Alters are such personal places/objects and vary so much, I'm not really the guy to say what you should or shouldn't have in your alter, other than passion and energy, those two are definitely required
I personally have three, one for my ancestors, one for the loa I hold dear, and one that represents the spirit of my home. They all differ very much of their construction, the time I spend with them, and the energy I put into them or ask from them.

Overstandable, what Loa do you communicate with the most? If you don't mind me asking.

I believe the spiritual lifecycle is extremely important, it's focussed on his views and relies upon the natural being within you.

I could not understand why someone would be so afraid of Arnie Palmer because he's just a golf pro and he even has a drink named after him. But then I realized you did not misspell Arnie Palmer because a web search got a lot of results for Annie Palmer.
So it turns out that Annie's reputation is slightly more sinister than Arnie's. This was a fun video tour of the old plantation house she haunts.
