Anomie v. Shared Values
    #20383175 - 08/06/14 03:17 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Liberal v. Conservative

Individualism v. Collectivism

I have been doing some research about autonomy and how can isolate people and prevent them from connecting with others. That is, because a person does not share values with another person, the two people find it hard to connect and unite.

In the United States today it seems popular to find your own values and to build up your life by using your own strengths. But what if too much autonomy leads us away from value systems in which we could have connected with so many people? Perhaps anomie - lack of shared values system - prevents us from finding our true happiness and meaning in life.

In one study Bruno Frey and Felix Oberholzer-Gee asked communities in Switzerland if they would be willing to allow a waste dump to be established in their town(condition 1). 50% of the people in this condition accepted the waste dump.

The two scientists then asked communities if they would be willing to allow a waste dump to be established in their town and be paid for it(condition 2). 25% of the people in this condition accepted the waste dump.

Those people from condition 1 were 25% more likely to accept the waste dump, but why?

From the given data, one cannot ascertain exactly why -- but one can make inferences.

I will make one.

Perhaps the people in condition 1 were intrinsically motivated and wanted to help their country. And perhaps the people in condition 2 felt bought or cheapened by the offer of money.

Some of America's early value systems originated from Christianity. Today Christianity's popularity seems to be decreasing. So what should we strive for in this contemporary world? What could unite us and give us a sense of connection?

In this video Nic Marks proposes his idea of what kind of values seem worth striving for. I like his message.

How do you feel about all this? What would you strive for?
