dumb spore print question
    #2037525 - 10/23/03 09:13 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I know I probably sound dumb, but how does one take a spore print with a mushroom that's young and the cap is like this? I've read the sites (Yours was really helpful mjshroomer), but they're never specific enough:

Picture

I figured it would work the same, so I popped off the cap, and now have it on paper.

I know it's not an active shroom, I'm just practicing IDing these.

first off, i'd say that is looks like ti may be an Agaricus species. it is possible to get a print from a cap that young, but not always.

what you will want to do id seperate the cap from the stipe, then remove the veil where it is attached allong the cap margin. print it then as you would normaly, letting the cap sit till it sporulates.

if this does not yield a print, you will want to find a more mature specimen. most agairicus mushrooms fruit in numbers, so this should not be hard.

as a note: Agaircus species are notoriously difficult to id to species and it usualy requires multiple specimens in various stages of maturity to verrify certain features.

some features to note are covered in the sticky threads.
the book "Mushrooms Demystified" has a good section on the identification of Agaricus species that is well suited for the lay-person; though, identification of these species for consumption by beginners is not recomended.
i do not even consume any but a select few species of agaricus that are relatively safe in the event of a mistake.

you should do some research on this genus if you are interested in the challenge of identification.

OK, would it be cool to just cut off a layer that includes the veil?

OK, good. I just sliced off a small layer of the bottom, and the gills/spore area is perfectly open now. It smelled almost like paint, if that aids in any kind of ID.

If a mushroom has a distinctive odor (not rotting), then it's almost always an important feature to note.

Thanks for the replies. It smelled like paint, but also very earthy and such. Stem, when broke apart had white cottony stuff (pith?) inside, but it was a pretty tough thick stem. Spore is printing right now.

an paint like smell would be a phenollic one [i believe]
does your mushroom btruise yellow in any place?
try scratchingt the surface of the stipe, the base of the stipe and the flesh of the cap [will need to be sut in half so the flesh is exposed, rey to find another specimen for this] and let me know where.

some features required to get an accurate id to species will require microscopic examination.

Yeah, the stem bruises slightly yellow, but I only got one and the cap is printing right now. Oh yeah, solitary growth pattern.

In case it's poisonous, I should definitely washmy hands after touching it, right?

the toxic agaricus species are not really deadly. most agaricus poisonings are caused by indevidual sensitivity. some species are known to cause these problems in the majority of people who eat them, some are edible to most. some, such as the white button mushroom are rather safe for almost all people who eat them.

i'm not particularly familiar with the compounds involved, but TM is verry knowlegeble about mushroom toxins, so he may be able to tell you about it.

I don't think they've really identified the toxins in the poisonous Agaricus species. They seem fairly sure that phenol is one of them. It would also appear that the speculation about various sesquiterpenes was probably off the mark.

If somebody is looking for a possible topic for a graduate level thesis, here's one that might work.

Happy mushrooming!

Yeah....either way, it was a white spore print. I picked a mushroom (growing in cyanescens habitat) that looked like a perfect mushroom today, so I'm printing it now.

A little late, but would a galerina autumnalis be growing on a lawn? Because the "perfect mushroom" I mentioned before bears a striking resemblance and also gave a rusty brown print. I could get a pic as soon as I figure out how to get them off my friend's camera, but it looks a lot like this:

The gills weren't visible, they were hidden by a spongy veil(?). The cap felt almost like one of those foam beds that molds to your body. No really strong smell, just a normal earthy scent like a store bought mushroom.

Galerina autumnalis grows from wood. But Galerina venenata, a closely related and also deadly species, has been found in lawns. You should also consider the possibility that there could be buried wood under the lawn (dead tree roots are a common example) from which a wood rotting mushroom could grow. I commonly find Coprinus micaceus and Psathyrella candolleana growing in lawns from buried wood.

Happy mushrooming!
