What about birthing a cake on it's side?

Has anyone ever tried to birth a PF cake on its side. Do you think maybe shrooms would grow from both ends instead of mostly the top? I know that sometimes more grow from the bottom of the cake anyway! Just a thought!

Try it and tell us how it works. The thing is the vermiculate that you use to double case the cakes with will have less surface area = less water for cakes.

Yea your right. But you could lay the cake sideways in a big lid and fill in with verm. Know what I mean? Or, make an indent in a lid of verm so the cake fits pretty snug, sideways. Then you could put some verm on top. Right?

Of course you can, but the top will still get less. Overall, the side surface area, on 1/2 pinters, have less exposure than sitting upright. Try it, tell us how it works out. Ive tried it, actually, but its a pain when you want to cleanse the cakes or move them around, they have more of a tendency to fall when on their side.

How exactly did you slice the cakes? Will it damage the cake cutting with a sterilized knife? Also, it looks like you layed them directly on the perlite, did the half cakes get waterlogged?

when the cakes were 100% colonized i took them out, sliced them in half with a knife that i wiped down with alcohol, before and after each cut, then i cleaned out the jar put the two halfs back in filled the jar with water, closed it, and put em in the fridge over night, next morning i placed them in the grow chamber, directly on the perlite, with no problems

Excellent! I think I might give it a try! Do you remember if you got more fruit than you would have birthing the normal way? Sorry to be such a pain but that pic looks great! I really wanna try it!

so if i were to cut my full pint cakes in half, and set them on their flat side, they would still grow fine? and i wouldn't have to worry about not having room above the cakes? (the tops of the jars i have now are about two inches away from the top of the terranium)
