So i live in a 4th-story-apartment with a patio. my patio is carpeted but window are always open. lately i have been noticing a large number of mealy bugs. I bought some K-Neem at my local Nu-turf garden center but it doesnt seem to be doing any good.

they started on an african violate i had but then threw away, moved to an ornamental pepper and then to my sometimes triple blooming datura metel... here are some pics

has anyone had any experience with getting rid of these nasty lil creatures...

Maldison (Malathion), found at the garden centre. It's a contact spray. Toxic.

Dimethoate (Rogor) works too, that's systemic. Rather toxic, stinks.

Maverik, (the least withholding) is a contact spray and safer than the ^above two to use. It's a synthetic pyrethroid. But it can be phytotoxic as per my findings on some ornamentals if left in strong light after spraying.

White oil also works too, unlike Neem oil. It's non-toxic to people, just like Neem oil. But do not in temps over 30C in my findings. It's very damaging in full sun too on delicate plants (like soft new growth). Ideal for mealy bugs on woody materials, such as application to citrus. Do not use white oil on anything you'll eventually smoke. It just never comes off.

In any pesticide application, best to do it in the evening so it's not under sun with magnifying drops of water. Also spray in an open environment, not in the house/garage. Take your plant down stairs outside and spray and collect when dried. I used to do that with house plants when I lived in an apt.

Rule of thumb in pesticides, wear a spray canister mask and gloves. You should have that if you garden. Wash your face and arms in soap afterwards, esp. forehead, very dermal absorbing zone. Don't eat or smoke until you do. Pesticides are safe is used correctly.

Use a weeting agent, like Agri-Soak2 or WetterSoil to the mix so it stays on the foliage and on the pests. It's safe, unlike detergent which is ok if you're using herbicides. Get a bottle of wetting agent when you buy your pesticide.

for cacti mealy bugs i use this mix, which works wonders -
for each litre of water:
40ml alcohol/methylated spirits
5ml liquid dish soap
5ml malathion (~50%)
fill the rest with water or vice versa.
enjoy the killing!

thanks for the replies..

does anyone know where they lay eggs and such? are they on the leaf or in soil? perhaps if i can determine that i can figure out a better solution other than pesticides, then hopefully ill get rid and stay rid of them...

correction: 20ml of alcohol or methylated spirits per litre of the whole thing.
