I had the same problem with slowed colonization... it's probably not the water content if you followed PF tek ( that's what I thought it was ) but too much CO2 in the jars. Take the tape off the innoculation holes so the CO2 can vent and I gar-on-tee that you'll see 100% speed of colonization recovery in 1 or 2 days.... and so long you're careful contams going down the holes is very unlikely. The dry vermiculite layer will protect the rest.

Very true, I dont put the tape on my jars, I just cap w/ foil to P.cook and after they have cooled, I innoculate and then place in a tupperware container w/ filter discs. Colonization time dropped by almost 5 days. I believe it was due to the air exchange allowed by the filter discs. And with the discs, I havent had any contams.

Filter disks? Could you elaborate on this setup you got? It sounds pretty interesting. I had the same problem as Jim's friend.
