Living with tribes in South America?
    #20362842 - 08/01/14 11:18 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Anyone here done this? I recently read a book and they went and lived with the tribes for a bit.

I'm just wondering how plausible this is to do in real life? I know there would be a lot of downsides, but it seems like a life experience that I want to try. Are there tribes that allow new people to join them given they contribute and do their fair share of work?

I know a guy who got a linguistics degree and is living in asia and will eventually live with certain cultures doing some linguistic shit with small tribes or something, idk about any specifics.  But like the other guy said you should get into some academic field and do research or something while living with them

Yes, it is possible, although I am not sure how "authentic" the experience would be. I know of someone who lived with the shipibo for a month or two.

Money talks maybe?

Some tribes today you will find have motor boats so will welcome fuel money, trade for at least some of their food stuffs and tools and materials with others or go to small towns, so you could probably come to some sort of agreement with one of the families there, live with them for a while.

You have a certain tribe in mind? What activities are you interested in more specifically?

Being able to enjoy the "true" human experience. I feel as if technology sets us apart, whether it actually does or not is what I want to find out. I feel as if our current society focuses on incredibly weird things as well (what logo is on your car, what logo is on your shirt, how new the coloring on your house is).

Modern day society just doesn't feel right to me and I want to experience something different.

Then might I suggest the psy festivals, and/or festivals in general?

I'd say psy ones as there the ratio between shroomy trippers and alcohol/tobacco simpletons is a bit better, providing more magic. Plenty of real human experience there, not that tainted from commercial interests and TV brainwashing.

One problem with planning to go so far out of your comfort zone might be that it's unsustainable. If you can afford (money and family-wise) to start living with tribes several months a year, as a lifestyle, then by all means go for it. If it's only going to be a one time thing, and then forever after that you will be MORE aware of the problems of urban Western society life, then I'd say keep looking for something you can actually pursue as a lifestyle.

One example about this: The Aya trips and ceremonies. I live in Europe, was planning to go to Peru for them, but couldn't yet afford it. Then I found that Santo Daime offers proper ceremonies in the Netherlands, and started going. Much cheaper, much more actionable. Was awesome, this is my 6th time here, and in fact this time around I'm already for 7-8 months here. People that I've been seeing planning for the Peru trip at the same time I started thinking about it, either went once and then never went again, or (worse yet) are still planning and saving, years later

Food for thought.

I've been really interested in joining/visiting a Santo Daime church. I'm very close to Los Angeles. Surely there must be a church near here?

I disagree, the highlands of Peru is a rough life, mostly above the treeline, very dry, dusty, with nothing but little aside from lallamas, corn and water contaminated by volcano contaminates.

The jungle - sure, that could pretty cool, but in the highlands - no thanks. Very low quality of life. 0 abundance.
