PF-TEK Growing problems
    #2036713 - 10/23/03 03:23 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I have been trying to grow using the PF-TEK method without sucsess. First time I had contamination problems. I took measures such as pre-sterilizing my substrate materials and wearing rubber gloves on my second try. I seem to have eliminated the contamination, but only two of my ten cakes colinized and they are not producing anything. I'm using an ultrasonic humidifier and staying around 90 to 95 percent humidity. My temperature is steady at 78 degrees F. I'm giving the cakes two hours of light each day. Any help that might explain my failure would be greatly appreciated.

more details: recipe/sterilisation method/spore source

2 from 10 isn't SO bad first go - you have two cakes ready to fruit. expect pins about 8-14 days from birth. good luck
you're on the steep part of the learning curve still, which is a lot of fun.

dont forget to rehydrate your cakes after birth and between flushes with a dunk. also do this when the cakes have a bluish tint to them, dont worry..its pretty easy to distinguish a bruising cake from a contamination...

also, like shirley said, id like some more information about your setup.
id like to know how long since birth its been, cause as shirley also said, 8-14 days just for pins, add another few days for full fruits that can be picked...just wanting to make sure you arent getting overly anxious =)

just remember, even if you fail 9 out of 10 jars, and only get one to fruit, even with one fruitbody, you have sufficient supply of spores to start all over again. so its not really about how many times you fail, its more about how many times you tried, versus how many times you learned something from any loss of any jar. it should be a progressive learning experience, if we could all get every jar to colonize every time without failure, the teks and everyone else wouldnt tell you to make a batch of 10 or 12 each time =)

anyway, good luck, keep us updated, and hope to see you around more often. =)

I used brown rice flour and vermiculite. The spore syringe came from The Shaman Shop. Followed the PF-TEK recipe to the letter. By dunking, do you mean to just put them under water? How long? It has been 20 days now since I put the cakes in the terrarium.
Thanks for the replies. I appreciate any help I can get and I hope I will be around more often too.

Yeah, dunking means putting the cake under water for anywhere between 12 to 23 hours. Tap water is fine.

It didn't pin in 20 days? Remove it from the terrarium and dunk it in the fridge. Then, roll your cake in moist vermiculite (you can sterilize it for safety, but not necessary). Put it back in terrarium with 99% humidity, give it 12 hours of light a day and fan 3 times a day.

That's the best you can do.

Last thing, build a poor mans pod, it just rules.

.fs.

i dont mean to be a thread hijacker but i have a question about dunking. you said that tap water is fine to dunk with, but do you need to do any sterilization procedures on the water or any time during the dunking step?
