I used to stick with one shake between 20% and 40% but lately I have been shaking at about 5% to 10% then again at about 35% and it has sped things up a bit.

Shaking too often can also weaken the myceliail network increasing rates of contamination.

I couldn't disagree more. Sterile is sterile, and shaking doesn't make contaminants appear.

Thanks for the kind words, blojo. I've been around--I tend to stay quiet unless I disagree or I'm the first to see a post, and there's been a group of extremely competent and dedicated cultivators lately who've been keeping me quiet for the last few months. Not the least of which are our newest TCs, cronicr and pussyfart. I'm really happy they got their tags. I still spend an hour or two here every day, but my posting is less frequent.

depends man. i can tell you Aloha does NOT shake their grain more than once after inoculation. they do NOT fruit agaricus tho. depends on strain and that growers preference, in terms of commercial growing.

if they are a good spawn maker, they will use LPC (laser particulate count) or SPC (standard plate count) or a combination of the two, to determine the quality of the spawn. if there is more than 300 CFU (colony forming units) that particular spawn will not be used, much less shaken. these two tests are random, and in a commercial operation, where 50+ 11 lb grain spawn bags (usually MUCH more than 50 bags in a run) it is impossible to test each bag w/o making the cost of spawn production sky rocket.

Do you have a reference for this? I would like to read more into it.

personally i shake once at 30% for cubes. i was mainly responding to the article you referenced/linked to, that pertained to agaricus species.

Ok, so its been half a week since the remainder of the visible wbs on the sides of my jars colonized. On one of my jars, the top layer appears to have colonized, but i have noticed no visible change in the top layer of wbs in the other two jars(Maybe the top layer dried out?). Should i worry about this or should i proceed and spawn to bulk regardless of the top of the wbs colonizing? Here are some pictures.

Update: Guess it was dry. It probably dried out so fast because of how hot the room is. Temperature in the room that i have things setup in is an average of 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit. I spawned to bulk anyway without removing the uncolonized wbs on top. Jars smelled like fresh mushrooms when i first opened them. The scent was very pleasant Kinda made me hungry. lol Anyway, my tub fully colonized, started pinning, and i can see some baby shrooms forming. Only problems i ran into was that the walls of my tub dried up fairly quickly and i got some crazy side pinning action going on despite using a liner. Guess my tub isn't dialed in. Instead of tinkering with the polyfil/fan setup, I'll just mist and fan regularly so it doesn't dry out so fast like my jars did. Pins formed quickly after i misted and fanned the first time, so i'll continue to do it that way. If things go well, at the rate that its growing, i should have a harvest within a week. This has been a great learning experience for me and i've realized that there are some things that i may improve upon for future grows.

Grew unevenly, but I'm just glad to have a harvest at all. Second flush should be a bit more even.

You need more FAE, looking pretty fuzzy there.

OK thanks. Will do. I actually removed the polyfill from the top holes completely and left them that way overnight. Like 100 pins popped up the next day. Lol Wow.
