funny growth behavior
    #2033742 - 10/22/03 07:21 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Okay, it's the end of the 3rd day since I've had my cakes in the box. I'm using an ultrasonic humidifier that I electronically modified to have substantially lower mist output (I simply added resistance to the emitter). This is what I'm worried about:

The first two days of growth really impressed me. I noticed the baby shrooms grow at least a whole centimeter in length every day. Well, since yesterday morning, they really haven't done much of anything except accumulate this suede-looking white fuzz on the caps (especially the youngest specimens). I'm positive this is related to humidity problems, but I really don't know in which direction to adjust (I'm not using a hygrometer). I can adjust it high enough to where I see a hazy fog in the terrarium, or low enough to where I can notice the air inside feel dryish. Does anyone know a good way to judge where I'm at without using a hygrometer?

Another thing that's funny, on some of my smaller shrooms, the stems are beginning to brown somewhat. Well, no, they're browning a significant amount.

I hope I'm not asking dumb questions, it's just that I really don't want to hurt them, and I really don't have much to go by in the literature except stuff like, "..very high humidity is necessary for healthy growth..", or, "..total saturation will drown them".

I've been trying to keep the humidity Just Below where I can see visible fog in there. What do you guys think?

My first guess would be something related to heat, if your temp is in the 80s you might be activating myc growth. See if reducing the wattage on your light source is a possibility. I still wouldnt rule out moisture though.

Sounds like low humidity to me.

You dont need to be able to actually see mist/fog in the air inside you terr. As long as the sides have visible moisture on them, things are fine as far as humidity goes.

when i grew cakes I found that lack of air exchanges cause the fluffy stuff to grow I would bet that's where your having problems.

I would also look to air exchange first.
You don't mention temp, that could be a factor too.

1.how long is your ultrasonic running per 24 hour period?
2.what methods of air exchange are you using?
3.why dont you put the ultrasonic back in it's box and build a poor mans pod?

Thank you so much for your replies.

Well, my humidifier is running 24/7, and I'm only opening the lid on the terrarium about once or twice a day, just to get a good, close look at how things are doing.

But yeah, Temperature! I can't believe I hadn't thought about that. The thermometer is reading 83F, which is a little on the high side. Do you think rotating some ice packs in the terrarium would do the trick?
