Alcohol?
    #2029408 - 10/21/03 04:25 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

I have been using a Chloroxylenol containing soap for sterilisation so far, same as you use for cleaning after pircing. So far i have had onley 1 contam on my jars and that wash bacillus. Buth i am wondering since most people seems to use alcohol do you need to use 96% alcohol, our will 38% do. If so is the case i can just rub with ordinary wodka, 96% alcohol can be harder to get.

no you will want isopropyl alcohol to sterilize, not distilled vodka.

i use 91% no problem. never tried 70% and never heard of 38%, and never seen 98% to try out.

works good for me

NO never seen our herd of 98% alcohol ither i know  i can gett 96%  buth it costs a bit more then  the chloroxylenol, and besides  in my contrey alcohol over a sertain % is counted as a DRUG and therfore illigal. Exept medical use that is, 96% shure as hell qualifies in the drug department unles a doctor is swabbing your arm with it

Are you looking for 98% drinking alchohol?  What you want is 98% isopropyl alchohol.  It should be in the pharmacy.  Certainly not a drug

and thats what you want. have you ever seen/heard of rubbing alcohol? im pretty sure thats what isopropyl alcohol is. it shouldn't be hard to find. i know that my parents have some in some drawer that they had to use for something a long time ago. its not for drinking or anything like that, its for cleaning cause it kills all the bacteria and stuff. if you put a drop on your arm it would be really cold as it evaporates.

Cool rubbing alc. trick --> Put rubbing alc. (i use 70%) into a spray bottle. Light lighter, spray cloud of alcohol into the air from behind flame. Cool-assed fireball is created... it is not your average fireball... burns slower than most. You can actually keep spraying your spray bottle before the flame goes out and keep the fireball going in the air... My record is 12 sprays.

Alcohols are commonly used topical disinfectants. They effective against Gram + and Gram - bacteria, fungal spores, and enveloped viruses. Alcohols are not effective against bacterial spores and non-enveloped viruses. Alcohols require time to work and they do not penetrate organic material.

Note, bacteria can remain dormant for centuries. It can also survive decades being inside a freezer-dryer. It can also stand boiling water. Because the endospore is so protective, it's hard to kill.

Now, when the bacteria touches 91%-100% isopropyl alcohol(rubbing alcohol), because there is a very low water content. This will enable the bacteria to produce the spores very quickly because it is "stronger" and provides a harsher environment.

When the bacteria touches the 70% alcohol, it's not as "strong" or harsh to the bacteria. Because the conditions aren't as adverse, the production of the spores will be slower, allowing more time for the alcohol to kill the bacteria.

You can usually find isopropyl alcohol wipes in a chemist or a supermarket that are gamma sterilised and are 70% alcohol. These are very effective and are also convenient in the sense that they are disposable.
