substrate.....trying new things
    #2030530 - 10/21/03 11:29 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

well when i was trying to pick different substrats i just couldn't deciede to be honest with you between corn and grain. so i did it like this-2corn/grain mixed jars, 2 corn alone, 2 grain alone. all with the b+ strain. not sure what will do what but i figured what the hell.also when making the jars i had a thin dry layer of verm on bottom (to catch the piss) substrate layer of foil thin layer of verm again dry(to help against contams) and that the lid. the lid has four holes in it and the tin that has the verm on top has many pin sized holes for air exchange.if any one has done the corn/ grain mixture befor please share i am interested in your results. thnx in advance

corn and grain will work fine, should be no problems there.

but leave out the verm altogether in the jars. not needed at all and the nice thing about grains is that you can shake them. if you put the verm in there and shake. you defeat the purpose as you would just shake the verm in with the grains.

hope it works out for you

good luck

i don't understand why you want me to take the verm out i thought the top layer was supposed to keep out contams and i read that the bottom of some peoples jars didn't colonize because of the piss that runs off. Like i said i don't know any of this for sure this is my first grow(and by grow i mean it in a made up fairy tale kinda way;). So if you could explain a little, maybe i read somthing wrong. thnx for responding though

i shall try to elaborate:

first off the verm protective layer is for the pf tek which if you are using grain, is not needed. you should use tyvek (my fav) or polyfill to keep out contams. do a search on either and you will see how they are used.

on the second issue of verm on the bottom; i don't see problems with myc waste in a colonizing jar. you should worry about that when you have a colonized jar and you want to case it. myc waste is not seen in jars in my exp. so no need for the verm there.

hope that helps you out.

yes that helps alot......I knew i should have used tyvek but well i was being lazy and i didn't see why the verm wouldn't work. but i didn't know about the whole bottom layer not being a problem.next time i will forget the verm get some tyvek and be on my way, thnx for you help
