The hsf = heatsink fan, it is an "air" cooler that comes with your CPU.  You'll have much higher load temps when using it, and it is entirely unsuitable for overclocking.  The Corsair h100i is a Closed Loop All-in-One Liquid CPU Cooler, it performs the same function, it cools the CPU, it just does the job much better than the crappy stock air cooler that intel packages with their CPUs.  It's highly suitable for overclocking the unlocked "K" line of processors.  I've been running 4.5ghz for years now w/ a cheaper model of what you have.

Hmmm, were you looking for a more technical explanation?

There's an integrated heat spreader on top of the cpu chip, it is that square aluminum piece... The purpose it serves is that the heat the cpu die produces transfers to a larger surface.... the heat sinks are conducting heat from the spreader to a disappation point with either air or liquid cooling... You'll notice that a thermal compound is pre-applied to the heatsink (and water block for liquid cooler), that fills the air gaps between the integrated heat spreader and the heat sink, to conduct the heat transfer.

An air cooled heat sink transfers the heat to the cooling fins and the fan forces ambient air over the fins picking up the heat and flowing it away from the heat source.

With liquid cooling you have liquid flowing through a water block powered by a water pump that transfers the heated water to a radiator and the fans attached to the radiator cool the radiator fins, thus cooling the water inside the radiator.

Also worth mentioning to OP that the heatsink comes with thermal compound pre-applied (as you mentioned), but it's a one-time deal.

I.E - once you attach the heatsink to the CPU and make the seal between the CPU and the heatsink, with the thermal compound conducting the heat to the cooler....
If you ever pull that heatsink off again for any reason, you will need to completely clean off all the old thermal compound (with a lint free cloth and some rubbing alcohol), on both the CPU and the heatsink... so they are both bare metal.. and apply a fresh dab of thermal compound before re-attaching it.

There are many different methods for applyiing thermal compound, but I find the easiest/most foolproof method is just the ~rice grain to small pea sized grain of thermal compound in the middle of the cpu and just put the cooler on, when you tighten the CPU cooler on there it will spread it all out. The thermal compound layer is supposed to be as even and as THIN as possible. Most noobs use too much compound, and that is bad. Too little is bad too, but too much can be worse. Some people apply it and then spread it around with a credit card or something, but that can be messy and can cause air bubbles which you don't want. I find it's easiest to just put the small dab on the CPU and attach the cooler and it will all mush down and spread when you tighten it. A good rule of thumb is it should be about the size of a grain of rice or just slightly larger.

You shouldn't HAVE to re-apply thermal compound, but just something to keep in mind in case you ever do move it or pull the cooler off for any reason..
Once you attach that CPU cooler, you've made the seal with the thermal compound. If you pull it off, you ruin the integrity of the compound and you CANNOT just put it back on there as it will have tons of ridges and air bubbles and thus will not conduct heat efficiently as it should. You need to clean it all off and re-apply fresh compound. Maybe watch a couple videos of how to do it if you ever need to.

Also this would require you to buy some new thermal compound, as the HSF only comes with it pre-spread on there and is only good for one time.

When you attach the HSF / Cpu cooler... try not to move it around side to side once you have it touching the CPU, as that could mess up the compound. Fortunately with the newer corsair coolers this is pretty easy, just get it lined up and screw it down tight, working in a X pattern. IE... screw down top left a couple turns, move to bottom right a couple turns.. move to bottom left a couple turns, move to top right a couple turns.. alternating like that until it's completely tightened (HAND tightened strength, you don't want to torque it down). Doing it in the X pattern ensures that you are tightening it down evenly on all sides. If you have ever tuned a drum, same principle.

No I was not, but thanks for explaining it otherwise. I never thought to attach the water cooler and heatsink that comes with my cpu; although the way I worded my question it defiantly seemed that I did

The video I watched had the guy making two rigs, one with a watercooler like mine and the other with the shitty heat sink thing; I  was pretty high last night and I won't be when I'm actually putting everything together because I'm pretty useless in that state unless I'm doing something I've done a million times

I know I sound like a total newb, I'm probably using some terminology or saying somethings that look retarded but I'm not going to begin making my computer till I'm fully ready, I've got notes made up on what all my components do; links to videos and other articles that will help me as well, tips, ect.

I haven't put a full effort into it because I've been busy, and always had in mind that I wouldn't fully invest  time everyday until I had all my parts, and I'm picking up the last one today. I mentioned I might start sunday, but that was being generous; most defiantly won't be prepared by then.

I've got a general idea on what to do, it seems to me like it's just like putting together a puzzle, reading the Manuel that comes with the MB and connecting things where they are supposed to go. Putting the components in looks pretty straightforward, it's all the cables and such that will be the most difficult I think.

Thanks for your help guys, all of you. I have a friend who has made his own computer before, but he's kind of a dick; and a know-it-all, so I'm not having him here when I make the thing. I can do it, I just need to do the work and prepare beforehand.

It's really not that hard. It's basically just like putting legos together.
The "hardest" part for beginners is usually mounting the CPU in the socket (just line up the triangles, put it down straight.. DON'T BEND PINS!), and mounting the CPU cooler (the Corsair coolers are easy as fawk to install). Everything is pretty much just plug and play. Just take your time and be methodical and everything will be fine. You'll probably need to bust out the manual for the tiny little connectors on the motherboard that correspond to your front panel case buttons (power, reset etc).

Also take advantage of your case design. You can route ALL the PSU cables through the back of the motherboard tray, so that they aren't cluttered all over the place inside your case. You'll see there's a bunch of holes inside the case, use those to route your cables exactly where you need them, and the bulk of the wires will be hidden and tucked away behind the motherboard for a more clean install.

Kinda like this, a build I did for a guy last week, you can see the cables from the PSU are all going through the first hole and then popping out where they need to be. Everything is routed through the back.

That yours?  You upgraded to Haswell?  I did for my laptop for the battery savings, but have been waiting on Broadwell for the desktop, supposed to be a good 30% faster.

A gtx780 with 3gb would be nice...
the only option is 2gb or 4gb

4gb is way over kill, even with 3gb I read the GPU can't acess what's in there so it's almost like going from 2gb to 4gb wont mean anything at all

That's not true.. a 780 can definitely utilize 4GB. You are probably thinking about a 740 4GB or something.. that is a total gimmick, the 740 does not have enough GPU power or bandwidth to utilize 4GB.

I've been really busy so I'm not 100% finished, I've got everything put in, with the exception of my GPU. I've got majority of my wires hooked up but still have some to do; I'm kind of troubled though I think I need to take out my MB again.

Long story short my case only came with one Motherboard Standoff, I've got my water cooler hooked up and MB is screwed in but I just seen this video and the guy is saying I need 9 standoffs otherwise once I start my computer up I'll fry my MB.

Makes sense but fuck I've got everything plugged in so I'm wondering if in fact I need to take all this stuff off and by some more Stand Offs?

I have a total of 9 ports to put screws in, I have eight in now and the standoff that came with the case is in the middle; does that look right I'm guessing no?

I doubt it will fry your motherboard, would probably just immediately shut off, but don't even try it....  You need the standoffs.... I imagine somewhere taped on the inside of your case is some standoffs and other screws etc, maybe inside a drive bay or something.

Wait, you got a Corsair 760T?  I have a couple Corsair cases, the 650D and a 200R and both had standoffs already preinstalled and then a special standoff nub to align the board...

My stupid work picks up files.shroomery as "DRUG SITE" and blocks it, but the forums worjk fine.  Any chance you can post your pics in full size somewhere that isn't on the shroomery's network?  Otherwise someone else will have to assist or have to wait until I get home in 8 hours.

If I understand what your saying you are asking about the bolts and nut mounts that attach the motherboard to the case correct?

These things?
