Three Generations Hypothesis
    #2029708 - 10/21/03 07:54 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Religious beliefs last about three generations in America. I've talked to others, their timelines move something like mine.

My grandfather was a diehard catholic. Born poor, died poor in a philadelphia irish/german/italian neighborhood.

My father was raised catholic, but no longer attends church. He went to medical school, against the odds. Born poor, now can afford to raise a family in the upper side of the middle class as a physician.

I'm an atheist. Interestingly enough, i try to maintain my morality in a way that my father would approve of. I respect him, I tell the truth almost compulsively, and so on. My hypothesis has nothing to do with a decaying of morality. I'm just saying that religious affiliation lasts about three generations.

Does this make sense to you?

yeah, im third generation irish-catholic, but i don't consider myself particularly catholic. i was confirmed, but i haven't been to mass in years. living in boston, i watched the sex-abuse scandal unfold daily in the globe, and the church's handling of it disgusts me. i still hold some catholic values, but for the most part the three generation rule certainly applies

What does that have to do with this thread?

I disagree, at least in my family. My parents, Grandparents and Great grandparants are and were VERY religious. My sisters are pretty religious and i'm just your run of the mill Christian who HATES religion.

i used to go to catholic church every sunday but when i turned 18 i started staying home when my family went every sunday. i haven't been to church in close to 6 months and i don't believe that church does anything for me. that is why i don't go. i also don't believe in no sex before marriage and what's the deal with noah's ark and adam and eve and shit like that? i don't understand why these stories are in the bible if evolution disproves them and they just don't make sense. i mean seriously, why would they make up stuff that we are supposed to hold as legitimate facts if they are so easily disproved and unbelieveable. why not still believe in santa clause or the easter bunny if you are going to believe those stories?
