Re: Moonshining - how to brew and distill vodkas, absinthes etc. using Turbo Yeast and a Wok Still [Re: Lophosaurus]

What's the best yeast to use then?  Also, the whole methanol thing is what scares me the most... is there some sort of dipstick test that can detect whether there is methanol or not?

I use bakers yeast because its easy to get and works for me. There is probably something better, but I'm not sure what it is.

I use the first pint of distillate for household cleaning. That's where all the methanol is. I don't think there is much methanol unless you're wash is made of certain fruits. A little methanol mixed in with your ethanol isn't that big if a deal. Of course its preferable to have only ethanol. In order to get a dangerous amount of methanol you would have to drink the first shots that come out of the still. Even then I don't think there is enough methanol to be that harmful unless you're distilling a huge wash, like +10 gallons, unless its fruit. As long as you do a little studying on the process of distilling and collecting/mixing the distillate there isn't that much of a danger of methanol.

Don't take my word on any of this. I'm no expert and I'm falling asleep as I'm typing this. I wrote all this out so if you want to do some research you will have a starting point.

Ok, I definitely would research some more before attempting it except for the fact that I don't think it's really worth trying since I can buy a half gallon of decent vodka for $15.  But, then again, purish ethanol as a solvent is very useful so I find myself tempted again...  but then again, just being in possession of a still is illegal in the U.S. so if one were to want to keep one's hands clean then it should be avoided.

I am pleased to see your post here on the Ice Water Wok  I joined the forums here to post my experience!

I have read everything on the net about the method and there are few people who have an unbiased scientific based report, AND experience, distilling with this simple equipment.

Virtually all the other forums are people trashing the method who have NOT tried it, :frown:

With that in mind I have been brewing sugar wash with Alotec Turbo yeast for a year or so, I carefully watch the temperature of the brew and control the heat by controlling the temperature of the room I brew in.

By keeping the temperature curve at the high limit I can consistently get 18% to 20% alcohol in 5 days (with the Turbo yeast and 21 L water and 8 KG sugar).

I filter it with a double stack of britta filters and flavour it with fruit or juice concentrate or Mio! ... at 90 cent litre and goes well with my daily meal AND with my life style LOL!!

So I am on my second batch of Ice Wok distilling I use 4 litres of the brew described above and by keep the temperature at 180 to 190 degrees F and it yields a full Litre of 50 to 55% alcohol as clear as glass in 55 minutes on the first run.

My research reveals there is virtually NO Methanol in a plain sugar and water wash... so therefor there will be none in the fished product (at least less than is contained in commercially available apple juice etc)

It's not possible of course to separate the "heads and tail" out with the ancient style Wok Still, but it's simply just not necessary for safety reasons ... it might help with the taste however as both the brew and the distilled version have a distinct flavour unlike other drinks

I liked the fact I could make the unit with things I had around the house, the only modifications I made I did were to drill a small hole near the top of my old Stainless Steel soup pot for the thermometer to go into, and attach a spacer the bottom of an old coffee can

It's not really a construction but as you say simply gathering stuff we already own ... To 'make' the still I ...

... used the long thermometer from my turkey deep fryer, my teflon coated Wok, an old 1 gallon coffee can and a measuring cup, so the cost was zero dollars AND when I wash the items and put them away, there's no discernible "still" parts left over.

Perhaps I'll pst some pictures of the set up later if there is interest!

Yeah, please do so! I'm very interested in brewing and distilling myself. However, when I looked up this method om some other sites, they all said not to bother. A while back I did try to freeze distil a batch of mead I made and it ended up with a rocket fuel taste.. None too great. Then again, the mead in itself wasn't exactly superb either. When I have some more time on my hands, I'm definitely trying the wok still though.
