So we know for hard fact that uncased grains do not fruit well.
So why do some of you who don't case continue to leave exposed grains when you mix your subs up? I know its preference and all but have you ever thought "uncased grains don't fruit well, lemme take 3 seconds and cover this up" ?
It may or may not make any noticeable difference but I can't help but look at it that way.

Grains mixed in a properly prepared substrate do not need a casing because of the moisture in the substrate.
Part of the reason uncased grains don't fruit well is because they get too dry.
This drying problem is fixed by mixing with substrate, or some folks bottom water.

Because not putting a top layer my tubs colonize in 7-10 days max, with no negative effect of fruiting.

Nope......it was never that "exposed grains don't fruit well", it was more like "exposed grains will dry out and contaminate easily".....but they don't dry out when they are surrounded by moist bulk substrate...so skip the top layer of substrate and enjoy the sped up colonization times lol.

i'd say for me it's fc dependent, any trays in my sgfc will get cased or have a top layer because of the mass amounts of fae it takes in, if the grains dry out on top i got dead dormant mycelium there for mold to get a foot hold, mono's on the other hand i dont get dried grains from due to the set n forget they give as they always got beads of moisture on top to keep them hydrated...just my two pennies
