    #20282207 - 07/16/14 05:23 PM (9 years, 9 months ago)

So im super late but, could anyone be kind enough to help me get started using tor? What should i use? Is there anything i need? Is it going to slow my computer down? I really want to explore the darkweb too. Any help or advice is noted and appreciated.

If install and use it you will go on a list and the NSA will just watch your ip activity more closely, assuming they can find out it's you who's using it.

Go all out with it or not at all

I kind of regret downloading it, I suspected I would be marked in some way, recent leaks have confirmed........

TOR is not worth it unless you're going to be extremely paranoid or have some shit that needs doing

Yes, the only way to access the darknet is using Tor, although you can use the less popular I2P (which is better IMO). If you're going to be using darknet markets, don't use TBB (Tor Browser Bundle). It's better to go with Tails.

While totally true today, I still call BS! BS! BS! Don't let those shady government bastards scare you.

The internet today is a privacy-free, festering cesspool of tracking, data-mining, information brokering, and targeted advertising. The fact that my distant family members who have no technical sophistication whatsoever have asked me about Tor and cryptocurrencies is testament to the fact that these concerns are going mainstream.

We now find ourselves in the sticky situation of having the tools that we need to protect our privacy (for privacy's sake) yet they are stigmatized and demonized. The only way to break those perceptions is for end-to-end encryption tools to gain widespread usage. We need as many people as possible to "come out of the closet" (to imply an illustrative analogy) today so that people in the near future can feel safe about protecting their privacy.

We find ourselves at a special point in the history of the information age such that we have the tools, desire, and motivation (thank you, Snowden) to fight back against the institutions that have siphoned away and monetized our identities.

I say do it. If you can, then please consider running an intermediate Tor node in your closet using that spare laptop that you haven't had the heart to recycle. Exit nodes, though, are an entirely different animal and you shouldn't run one without special care and intention. Which is a shame, because they are the bandwidth bottlenecks and the closest thing that the network has to centralized infrastructure. We need MORE MORE MORE good exit nodes to diffuse traffic away from the malicious ones.

Ok, I sense some major rambling building in my fingertips, so I'm going to end my essay here.

P.S. It's sure good to be back. I haven't visited the site in about a year (since I moved homes and switched ISPs). I've been waiting until I could get set up on a hosted VPN so as to hide my shroomery traffic from my ISP. Now I have a clean slate.

Tails. It's a fully integrated Linux OS designed to keep you safe (well... Apart from the remote code execution and de-anonymization attack just revealed. But that's a targeted attack so you should be safe)

If you don't want to use tails, use TBB (Tor Browser Bundle). The downside about TBB is it doesn't anonymize your DNS requests (as DNS is TCP/UDP and Tor only deals with TCP traffic). That's another reason to use Tails, it anonymizes your DNS request.

No, NOT REALLY. I mean yes, but no at the same time. I'm sure there are thousands, and thousands of darkwnet users who run TBB on Windows, but they're dumb.

Just download and burn TAILS to a disk, and boot from that.

Yup, you can create a bootable USB drive. You have to use UNETBOOTIN

Yeah, kinda.

I googled it for you, so you can play at being evasive. You have two options for downloading:

  1. First, is a direct HTTP (no TLS), so your IP exposure will be contained between you, the server, the (16 in my case!) routers between you, and anyone who happens to be listening at those routers. :uhoh: You'll need to use a live CD/USB image of any other Linux distro, and you'll need to do it from a network that you aren't associated with (coffee shop?).

The reason that I recommend downloading the image from a live Linux environment is that your computer is dirty. Every advertising company knows a lot about your computer. It's filled with 3rd party and flash cookies, and they've fingerprinted your browsers based on their addons and plugins. You can be sure that the NSA is able to cross-reference their databases with the ones built by these ad companies.

  2. Second, you can use Bit Torrent. If you use Bit Torrent, assume that your IP's connection is entirely public. Everyone in the world can watch the swarm, so you can assume that the NSA does. The advantage of using the torrent is that you're moving the bandwidth burden away from the tails developers, and that will save them money.

-----------------
HTTP.

Torrent.
hxxps://tails.boum.org/torrents/files/tails-i386-1.1.torrent

If you really want to get your hands dirty, you can verify the authenticated encryption.
hxxps://tails.boum.org/download/index.en.html#verify
hxxps://tails.boum.org/torrents/files/tails-i386-1.1.iso.sig
-----------------

As soon as they update 1.1, you should immediately repeat this process for the newer version. The current version has a deauthentication vulnerability. I'm sure that they'll patch the hole quickly.

Caution! There be a rant ahead! :captain:

I do have one bone to pick with tails, though. They made an insecure design decision when they setup the browser that's left me scratching my head... NoScript is installed in the browser, but it's configured to allow scripting by default. They claim that blocking scripting breaks internet browsing, so the balance that they struck was to allow all scripting. For all sites. For everyone who uses the distro. Remember that deauth attack? It's JAVASCRIPT!

That sloppy decision compromised the security of the system. Basically, they turned on the vulnerability by allowing scripting by default. If they could completely fumble such a simple and obvious decision, what other mistakes are they making?
Fine print: The vulnerable service is off by default, just like scripting should have been (the human would have to flip two switches instead of one)

Don't get me wrong, though. Using tails is far an away better than doing nothing. I just want you to go into this with the understanding and mindset that it's not a perfect shield for you to hide behind. It, like all systems, has its limitations and you have to be aware of them. Even though it's a live OS, the human driving it still has to practice operational security. Think of your browsing habits as your sterile technique on the internet.
